DescriptionWorld's Finest #244 Pg. 22Pencils by José Luis García-López Inks by Murphy Anderson Written by Bob Haney Letters by Ben Oda This page is from the first story in World's Finest #244 titled "Three Billion Targets" and featuring Batman & Superman of course! Investigating the deaths of three mobsters, Superman and Batman come across a plot to murder everyone on Earth. The criminal mastermind behind it all is a time traveller by the name of Robespierre Two, who wants to prevent a cataclysmic future by destroying mankind in the late 70s. Eventually, the heroes figure out the plot and follow him to his secret headquarters, where it is revealed that he has built a secret machine that will help him eliminate the human race. As depicted on this page here as well as the tragic history of the human race that Robespierre is trying to prevent as he goes through his monologue. I really love the detail in the José Luis García-López pencils and Murphy Anderson inks on this page. Each panel is so well done in it's storytelling, as the scenes shift from our heroes and villain to the history throughout various settings depicting the downfall of mankind. I especially enjoy the horizontal panels and the 2 vertical panels depicting something similar to the Nazi regime and a Space Station of descendants who escaped Earth as part of the monologue. On a page featuring both Batman and Superman, my favorite panels are all the other ones! ;-) Picked this up from Albert Moy awhile back on one of his art drops. Thanks Albert! Social/Sharing |

Sounds like a really fun story, if perhaps a bit over the top. The writer (Cary Bates perhaps?) was incredibly prescient in foreshadowing the rise of Trump rallies in the 6th panel! Cool page by the 2 guys whom I believe are probably the best ever DC penciller and inker!

Yeah ha def a bit over the top but fitting of the era (1977), the writer was Bob Haney it seems. And yeah JLGL and MA are a dynamic duo in their own right! Great team.

I forgot to mention, the bit that really put it over the top for me was the fact that there was apparently such little wrongdoing happening anywhere in the world that night, that the universe's most powerful being tagged along with the world's greatest detective to investigate the deaths of 3 mobsters.... 🙄
But while that sort of stuff was silly back then, today I would love to read this type of stuff if I had the time, because it's really just pure fun!

LOL, it's comics and the 70s. All is forgiven! I know what you mean though. I love my grounded/serious comics of the modern era from indie publishers and even the Big 2, but there's something about the more over the top silly storylines in the past that are very enjoyable to read now.

I'm really intrigued by the García-López/Anderson pairing. On paper, you'd think their styles wouldn't mesh well. JLGL has such a confident and bold line while Anderson's is softer and more feathery--but their styles really complement each other well here. Terrific page and a great pickup.

That middle panel really ties it together! Love those deckled looking edges on each of the panel cutouts.

JLGL and Anderson are able to present the page so eloquently through these images, that Robespierre Two actually makes a pretty clear case. Some days people just want to hit the reset button through scorched earth methods to play god and create their own utopia. The plot of a great many movies and books where the stakes have to be raised and there needs a hero to rise up and stop them.

I'm a big fan of WF 244, DC's 1st Dollar Comic. I put Bob Haney right up there among DC's greatest writer's of the 60's and 70's. He could write a campy story just as good as a compelling story like this one. And this is a fairly early point in JLGL's career when he started drawing Superman and Batman.

Well it was one of the first Dollar Comic titles. WF 244 was the first WF issue for a dollar. I'm sure there's a persnickety fan that would be more precise with the chrononology. In any case, great art !!!
