DescriptionEarth-X absolutely floored me when it came out and most of that had to do with John Paul Leon. Every page was pitch perfect and wonderfully complementary to the covers by Alex Ross. While Alex approached it with his customary "clean" realism, JPL brought GRIT to the interiors.I was fortunate in that I had gotten to interact with John Paul prior to his passing and even more fortunate that he graced me with an Earth-X commission. There's a tinge of sadness associated with that commission knowing now how sick he must have been during that period - something neither I nor the general public were aware of during that time. This splash (to me) represents happier times for JPL as his work really hit the zeitgeist on this book. The tragic story of Reed Richards and the FF was at the heart of this book and Namor being cursed to "burn forever" for what he did to the Torch was a great touch to the backstory. Er...spoilers? “Foolish cow. I AM the sea”. Never change, Namor. Never change. Social/Sharing |

Don't wanna get ahead of myself
Brushing inks I've never felt
It's John Paul art for me to explain
The personality in pencilling
Earth-X is my need, ooh
It cheers me up like grit with his charm
I wanna read it slow but it's so hard
I love to sea his face in daylight
Namor than just flames bursting in flight
But Art’s really temptin' me, ooh
Do you think I'm being foolish if I don't brush in?
I-I-I-I'm scared to death that this might be it
That the love is real for him, every bit
This might just be my everything of Leon (beyond)
Space and time in the afterlife
He leaves me with this, he’s sharp as a knife
He might just be my everything and Leon

Never change is right! That line was PERFECT :) Love how JPL renders the burning Namor here. So cool seeing the B&W OA vs the colored image - both got something to see! Congrats, E!

JPL would getter much better later on but Earth X certainly already left its mark as a series.

Fantastic, gritty, HEAVY page, E! I love how unbalanced and "weighted to the lower right" this whole thing feels; a really compelling and dramatic choice! "Burning Namor" was a pretty crazy choice that led to fantastic graphical interpretations, and JPL kills it here. WOW, Namor's figure work is good...
I'm right there with you, as far as the impact Earth X had on me when I read that. It was my first exposure to JPL's work, and (of course) I had seen nothing like it. BEAUTIFUL pick up, Eranga! Congrats!

A phenomenal addition to your spectacular collection. JPL's work on this series is without peer.
