DescriptionCover dated November 2005.The Hulk, knocked out!!! Who has the power to do this? The Abomination? The Leader? Doc Samson? None of them could compare to the might of Umar, who knocked the Hulk out after only six minutes!!! How did she do it? And why did it leave a smile on Hulk’s face? Well, kids, ask your parents about the birds and the bees and then maybe we can explain what exactly happened here. Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire created magic starting in 1987 when they revitalized the Justice League, turning it into a book unlike any that had come before it. It was funny without making fun of the characters. It had action without taking itself too seriously. And it redefined characters such as the Martian Manhunter, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold and others in ways that had a lasting impact (although I do recall some people being upset at the time about the characters being treated comedically). The aforementioned trio was given a brief chance to work its magic in the Marvel sandbox in 2005 with a Defenders miniseries that I thought was at least as good as what they did in the 1980s at DC. This page is from the third issue of that mini. If you haven’t read it, you should, if for no other reason than to see the Hulk transform back to Bruce Banner following this page, with Bruce not being sure why he feels so incredibly relaxed. I was very tempted to drop a bid on this, but reminded myself I can't always make impulse purchases every time something I like shows up. The Maguire pencils are so smooth and TIGHT! Such a great image. Plus you get a bikini babe with it, if cheesecake is your thing. Nice acquisition, Michael!

Thanks! If I had to pick a favorite comic book artist of the past 35 years, I would have to pick Maguire. I knew I had to get this the moment I saw it.

I watched Roger Rabbit and only Patty-Cake can explain what happened here.

I hope the Hulk wore gloves when he played patty-cake with Umar.

Would explain why his left arm is extra pumped.

Lol, great page! Birds and bees - got it :) Super fine inks here which gotta look even better in person. And those expressions...yes, Maguire does not disappoint. Suh-weet page all around - brings a smile doesn't it? Congrats!

Crazy thing is, there are no inks. This is all super tight pencils. I've heard some say that Marvel published straight from the pencils with this series, and I've also heard that the inks were done digitally (which I guess would be sort of a reverse blueline situation). Either way, these are pure pencils, and it's pretty cool.

Absolutely cool! Had me fooled, and that speaks to the deftness! Don’t know why inks would be needed for publishing. I’ve seen pencils published with a lot less! Congrats again, man!

I also noticed that one.
This was a fun moment in the series.
I also like the details Maguire highlighted to subtly tell the audience what just happened, like the "...hum..." erect niples and the over-veinous "...hum..." erect left arm ;)
(Can we say "erect" on CAF, Bill? ^^)

HA! Very fun and very well crafted page! By looking at it full size, it seems that Kevin originally drew Umar naked and he likely did the same with the Hulk. If that's true, of course he did it just for his own amusement. But in fact it would've made more sense :)

One of the joys of looking at original art is sometimes getting to see things that could not make it onto the printed page. This is certainly one of those times!

A page with a lot to look at and even more to think about. Well done on this really fun piece and the subtext is incredible to say the least.

Beautiful page! Kevin Maguire is a favorite of mine as well and this page captures everything that made that Defenders series so much fun.

I think I read an interview with Giffen years ago saying that the creative team wanted to do more, but Marvel wasn't interested. Which is an absolute crime on Marvel's part!

Thanks! She's the sister of Dr. Strange's foe, Dormammu, and the mother of Dr. Strange's love interest, Clea. She's also been an opponent of Dr. Strange. Basically, she's a Dr. Strange character.

Hulk's facial expression alone is enough to make this a great Kevin Maguire page. Cheers!

Thanks! Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen the Hulk quite so happy/content.

I was fooled by the pencils, too, Michael - I thought for sure this must be inked! Wow - great page here, man; a wonderful keepsake from a much-too-short lived series. I would have loved to have seen it continue (and wonder if they would have kept the Surfer still doing nothing but surfing in California, had the series continued :) ). A great example of a Maguire page, where all his best-known attributes are on full display - beautiful women, killer details (I LOVE the doorway framing Umar in the splash), humor, and facial expressions - and conspire to tell a pretty amazing story moment that we haven't seen very often (right, Hulk? Poor guy...). Fantastic add, Michael - congrats!

Thanks! I have to say, I think this may now be my favorite piece in my collection for all of the reasons you mentioned.

My amazement...that the Hulk actually lasted for 6 minutes. I'm betting my ex-wife could have accomplished that task in just 3 minutes.
Ending up with Hulk needing to seek out Dr. Strange for a shot of penicillin.
