I’ve a soft spot for the 2004 New Invaders, for a variety of reasons. I’ve always liked Union Jack, and thought the incorporation of a gas mask into his costume was brilliant.

Ironically, Grifter not having a gas mask was one of the reasons I didn’t get into Wildstorm back in the day. Early in the days of Image I read a character write-up of Grifter, claiming the cloth mask he wore protected him like a gas mask. Given it was just a piece of cloth draped over his face, and thus open at the bottom like a spacesuit in the original series of Star Trek, I couldn’t take Grifter or Wildstorm seriously.

It was around 20 years later I became the owner of a giant collection of Wildstorm comics, and got to reread the comic that mentioned the gas mask rag. . .only to find no mention of the rag stopping gas attacks.

Did I imagine it? Read it in an issue of Wizard? It was years before I was on the internet, and Image wasn’t popular among my friends, so I can’t blame them as the source of my incorrect knowledge.

Maybe this is my version of that thing about the proper spelling of that children’s’ book about the talking bears.

Oddly, Grifter's Not-Gas mask is nowhere to be found.

Relevant comic-related story: Despite being on the other side of the country, Eclipse Comics used to send stuff to be given away at comic cons local to me. Among them were several Miracleman promotional items, which were among the things I got rid of years later when my mother had a flip-out about how much "junk" I've had.

Over the years I've had several Miracleman fanboys flip out on me for "lying," as they refuse to believe there could be items they didn't know existed, let alone have.
