Description

Tim White's cover for The Ceres Solution (Granada, 1983). A classic "UFO in the woods" type of illustration, but here the egg-shaped UFO is like a jewel (the "golden egg"? Faberge'?) in a beautifully detailed forest. It invites us to climb onboard -- a portal to the unknown.

Tim's daughter told me when he was unable to actually sign his work he would covertly "sign" it with a small Aries symbol. Here the Aries symbol (looking like a curvy "T") can be seen on a gauge on the dash of the ship :)

Update: It was brought to my attention this piece was also used as the cover for a C64 game in 1986 (see additional image).

It looks like a classic time machine trope where they always leave the door unlocked for someone like us to climb in for an adventure. It is a story telling situation that is still being used today. Very beautifully done from the high tech interiors to contrast the natural world of the intricate forest setting.

This amazing one was also used as a cover for the C64 game "Return of the space warrior".
