Description

Okay, I don't even know where to begin to express how excited I was to be able to secure these 2 pages for myself. I know, I know, you guys are thinking "We understand, Rubén, you're a man of few words who has great difficulty expressing himself, and that's okay.". But this series has truly been a revelation for me. From the moment I read the two 8-page tie-in stories which introduced this new Swamp Thing host and which book ended the Swamp Thing Halloween Spectacular #1, I knew immediately that something special was afoot. After reading the Future State: Swamp Thing two issue story that immediately followed, I knew the industry had a generational writing talent on its hands with a forthcoming 10 issue maxi-series that had the potential to be one of the all-time great Swamp Thing runs, and Ram V. and Mike Perkins proved that to be the case.

I typically don't compare any contemporary work to that of the all-time great creators, but from the time I read the Future State two-part story, with slight trepidation, I went on record saying that this new work was as good as my favourite parts of Alan Moore's run, which happens to be one of my personal favourite comic runs of all-time from any publisher. Having now reached the 10th issue of the new maxi-series and with the benefit of hindsight, I'm thrilled to say that this run has indeed stood up to the test of that initial praise. Subsequently, as new art collectors I'd never previously even heard of continue to buy original pages from this series and I ask them how they're enjoying the run themselves, it's thrilling to hear back exaltation that echoes mine, with the name Alan Moore now commonly being mentioned. Due to overwhelmingly positive fan and critical reviews, DC Comics has opted to extend the 10-part maxi-series to 16 issues, which thrills me beyond belief because this next storyline will deal with the return of a fantastic newly created character named The Pale Wanderer, introduced in the first 2 issues of this series, and it appears Ram V. and Mike Perkins intend to make him the newest avatar in the Swamp Thing mythos.

Anyway, these 2 pages you see here are simply consecutive pages, NOT a DPS, but as a lover of this series and a fan of Dr. Woodrue and the swamp setting, I just couldn't bear to buy only the page 17 splash, given the brilliant, cinematic quality of the page 16 lead in, where we see Jennifer running through the swamp with Woodrue giving chase, hot on her heels. She stops to hide behind a huge tree, notices something in her peripheral vision, begins to turn her head and what she sees causes her to feel bone chilling terror! But as we turn the page, we immediately see that it's NOT Woodrue who has caught up and caused her to freeze in terror, but rather the sight of the Swamp Thing up close, who then picks her up as she passes out from fear. Reading page 16, it truly felt like I was watching this happen on screen, so well done! The final two panels in particular truly heightened my own fear and anxiety as I read the page, and that hadn't happened to me while reading a comic since back when I was reading issues #38 & #39 of the Moore run.

On page 17, the lead panel immediately lets us know as readers that Woodrue caught up to Jennifer only a moment AFTER Swamp Thing appeared and caused her to feint at the sight of him. After showing readers the somewhat "reverse Piéta" image of Swamp Thing lifting up the unconscious Jennifer, our eyes are then pulled down to that sublime, extreme closeup of Swamp Thing's haunting eyes, as he feels a sense of recognition while staring at Woodrue, even though this Swamp Thing is not Alec Holland, and slowly says "You... I...know you...". Soooo GOOOD!

incredible DPS. i'm a sucker for pieta poses. your explanation said it, but this was one of the stories of the year by far in 2021. Def the best DC story bar none, arguably the best big 2 story or overall story of the year as well. Writing and artwork has been top notch. Congrats on the piece and the success of the series and Mike's artwork!

Perkins could give the horror artists of the 1970s a run for their money. Incredible work.

Sophisticated horror from the 21st century does what the best have done in centuries past.  It strikes at the right notes to touch your soul with a twinge of darkness and dread.   It puts your emotions and thoughts off kilter as the great unknown looms in the back of your mind.  The Ram V and Perkins collaboration took us inside the lore as well as explore the circumstances of Levi to become the new Swamp Thing.  What frightens us is that anyone could stand final judgement and be consumed like Levi with psychological and physical horrors when confronted with one's own past.  What secrets and regrets will be revealed with more issues to come?  An announcement with 6 more issues should be cause for celebration as it affirms that we are ready for more career defining work by this team and assures us that we are now primed for more of what has made this series one of the finest and trendsetting explorations of the human condition.

Beautiful, if that write-up doesn't get people to try the series out, nothing will! Now you just need to get a page. 🥰

Waiting for the collection myself but I discovered Ram V on "these savages shores" and aws impressed.

I especially like the second page who's got a Swamp Thing the movie feel to it (with the central image). And yes I mean that as a compliment to Mike's realistic approach to his art.

What an excellent set of pages Ruben! Indeed with the two Future State issues, I knew this was going to be something special. The story and art have been top notch. These pages are great examples of the stunning work that Perkins is knocking out in this book. So glad to hear about it getting extended to 16 issues! Somehow I had missed that.

I instantly thought the same thing as FM, that the central image on the second page is an homage to the movie, and the first Swamp Thing issues, too. My word, these pages are stunning. IMO, this could end up being Perkin's best work. You have to be on cloud 9 representing him. :) Fantastic work, Rubén. Congrats!

Every new project that Mike tackles, he truly makes it his own and creates an instant classic.  Some really incredible panels here.  And look at those backgrounds!  The inking!! He must work around the clock to produce such amazing artwork.  I love hearing the excitement in your description too.  That's what it's all about.  Fantastic!

Breathtaking work by Mike Perkins! There is such a sense of gloom and dread exhibited here, Perkins' linework really brings out the sense of horror! Fabulous pick-up!

Ruben, these are incredible.  (I am SO overdue to pick up some Perkins pieces of my own...)  Perkins' illustrative bent is put to full use on this book, and his superb sense of sequential storytelling is spotlighted on consecutive pages like these, where you can just see the full thing slowly blossom and reveal itself.  Beautiful, beautiful work.  Sincere congrats, man!

Outstanding man, and though not a DPS, I like that you posted as one image. You really get the full effect of the next level storytelling. I've been impressed by many an example from this series posted on CAFover the last year, and this is right at the top. STRONG in terms of presence, atmosphere, emotion, and pure illustration. Whew. Congrats!
