DescriptionContinuing splash page posts this week with this killer Ghost Rider by Cory Smith! From the first issue of the new GR series Cory’s on – I’d recommend checking it out! Got a strong horror vibe akin to Immortal Hulk. This first issue was double sized, and this is the first image of GR in the book – Johnny Blaze’s return! Them demonic monsters there...yep...they about to get it.Definitely dig the upward perspective shot, adding some additional drama to the key moment, and the imposing figure that is the Spirit of Vengeance. Gotta love that flaming skull rendering, and it’s cool that his suit here is a play on the original leather Johnny Blaze suit, which IMO is one of the best looks for a character. You get a feel that leather’s the only material that can contain the hellfire. It always bothered me in the original Nicolas Cage GR film how, when he changed to GR, you could still see his t-shirt underneath the jacket, lol. See link here for the trailer Marvel made hyping this first issue – it ends with a lil’ animation of my page here: https://youtu.be/IjwQU1NhGQE. Cool stuff! Glad to add another piece by Cory to the collection! Thanks, Cory and Cadence! Social/Sharing |

Nicolas Cage's t-shirt could be seen because he got it from Mr. Fantastic. It's made of unstable molecules, which is what keeps it from burning up when the hellfire comes and the reason why you always see it. I dig the upshot here and for anyone who loves the early 90's Ghost Rider series, this splash SCREAMS early 90's Ghost Rider! Kudos, Kahlil.

Ahhh, so THAT's the deal - unstable molecules. I mean, Reed did have some experience with this, designing his brother-in-law's suit :)
Yes, definitely got that '90s vibe but also some '70s love with the all leather 'fit! Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

How cool that the Marvel Trailer for this #1 issue ends with a shot of this splash! I just watched it, and it is very cool. But not as cool as this awesome piece of art. Ghost Rider looks absolutely fantastic! Love the upward shot and the whole look of this new Johnny Blaze suit. Congrats!

Something wicked this way comes...
Maximum hellish effect GR in Cory's hands! And agree that is the coolest costume, by far.

Ridiculously great Ghost Rider page, K!
I love the perspective on the second panel with GR's fists on either side of the demonic monsters. You-know-what's about to go DOWN, son!!

Well, good ol' Kahlil went checking out his cart on art drop day
Upon his eyes art rested, he requested Cory Smith page
When all at once a mighty herd of red "On Hold"s he saw
Drawing through the ragged brush
And up his leather draws
His Skull was still on fire and his spikes were made of steel
The jacket's black and shiny and the Nic Cage they could feel
A bolt of fear went through them as he straddled with his thighs
They saw Ghost Rider comic art
And he heard their ink brush line
Yippie-Nic Cage (yippie-yi-ay)
Yippie-yi-yo (yippie-yi-yo)
Ghost Rider through Smith eyes

No way you couldn't use this song for GR at some point :) Thanks, man!

Fantastic splash, K! LOVE the strong and bold inks on the costume, counterpointed by the finer hatching on the skull - a very cool effect that really underscores Cory's multi-faceted skills. Panel two has a great belly shot / "Me mitts" moment (Sin City) where what normally would be a scary reveal of GR's opponents is recast as a "yeah, they're toast" beat (or beat down, more accurately). Really great work by Cory Smith! Congrats, man!

Great point around the scary reveal not being so scary! And "toast" is a good term considering the one doing the "toasting" :)
"Sometimes the world doesn't need another hero. Sometimes what it truly needs is a monster". After reading your description that line from Dracuala Untold popped in my head :) Thanks for the comments, man!

Ghost Rider's back, all right! Fantastic splash page by Cory Smith! Smith has managed to recapture the sense of horror and mystery that Ghost Rider has traditionally evoked. Love the upshot and the dramatic pose that heralds the return of the Spirit of Vengeance!

Good point, Bill - this new series definitely dials up the original horror and suspense aspects of the early books/stories - throwback feel but still with a fresh twist! Thanks for the add!

I love a character that can immediately create a lifelong fan based solely on the design. A flaming skull motorcycle-riding leather-lover that's literally hellbent on revenge??? Sign me up. This is an all-time image of one of Marvel's most iconic heroes. Congrats!
