DescriptionPublished June 2004.May 1999. Excitement swept across the globe as people excitedly awaited the premiere of the first Star Wars movie in sixteen years, "Episode I - The Phantom Menace." Fans waited on long lines to see the movie when it opened, entering the theater with high hopes of recapturing the magic of what we now refer to as "the original trilogy." Many left the theater with mixed feelings. A major source of those mixed feelings was the mostly computer-generated Jar Jar Binks. Who thought this character was a good idea? George Lucas defended him by saying that Star Wars was meant for kids, and kids will love Jar Jar. Well, my sister who was nine years old at the time certainly didn't, nor did any of her friends. I've met a few people who begrudgingly like Jar Jar, but I have yet to encounter anyone who loves the character. It turns out that fans weren't the only people who disliked Jar Jar. Jar Jar's father, George R. Binks, also despised his incompetent fool of a son. George was a proud whaler of great skill and courage. Jar Jar brought him both shame and financial ruin, destroying George's whaling ship and stranding them on a deserted island. To make matters worse, George had chosen to continue his family line rather than be with the woman he loved. We see here George dreaming about his true love, the warrior woman Sheebla, who he left in order to start a family with Jar Jar's mother, who he did not love. He is awakened by his fool of a son being attacked by an octopus-like creature. George has no choice but to accept his life of misery. Tony Millionaire did an amazing job on this story. He captured the despair of George R. Binks in all of its tragic glory. Social/Sharing |

In fairness to you, I think the people of 1977 would have gone crazy for a dancing Jar Jar in the Mos Eisley cantina scene.

Ah, now THIS is a Star Wars character I can really love. George R. Binks always knew the horror that his son would go on to be, horrifying millions of people!

Never thought I'd see TM's art on a Star Wars story but it works!

Hahaha, great transition from George's fantasy of Sheebla to Jar Jar running on the beach with an octopus attached to his head. On top of everything else this disappointed father has had to face over the years, that's just gotta sting. As that octopus probably did to poor Jar Jar.

When you're on a Star Wars Tale
Marry Binks, George Lucas way
All the dreams that come to you
And I Sheebla feel it too
On an island with his son
Prophecy of the chosen one
And it's misery all time
I see why he's so lame
Hip-hip

Bring him back Dave Filoni
They rhyme like it's poetry
He's the key to all, you know
Palaptine to take the throne
On an island with his son
Tony drawing Jar Jar's run
And it makes me feel the lines
He can control all day
The rule of two together
He is the true Sith master
He'll Meesa feel bad even more

I have it on good authority that Rivers Cuomo cheered for the battle droids when they fought the Gungans at the end of Episode I.

I remember this story by Tony Millionaire and how much it affected it me when I read it. Taking an absurd premise featuring the least beloved of all Star Wars characters, Millionaire somehow made it work. This last page from the story perfectly encapsulates why the story is still remembered. Congratulations!
