Description

This page opens spectacularly with half a splash of the crew setting camp in the snowy mountains. You really get a sense of the establishing scene with all characters acting in their own manner and all the gear on the ground. The backgrounds are also super nice with the rocks and the subtle way that Steve established how windy it is up there. With the flags flowing but with the breath each character is exhaling.

The scene remains super readable in the sense that you immediately see the characters first among the other elements, including the numerous flags and the mountain which Steve only delineated.

Then we get a series of 5 little vertical panels which are a textbook example on how to make things look interesting on the page for the reader by varying shots and angles. A bird and worm view, close up and wider shots, everything is there. We even get a glimpse of Wally using his powers (and a pair of very cartoony eyes in the last panel).

Mention of the expert inks which are high contrasted with the open lines and open spaces within the page. Again, I love the feathered inks on the clothes in panel 1.

That you love the art or not, this remains a lesson in storytelling on a quiet page.

Funny how they have a drum barrel labelled trash for all those foreigners who have been reported leave all manner of trash on their way up and down Mount Everest.

Really nice page, F M!  (Am I seeing things, or does it look like the "credit listing" in the upper right corner of the page reads "Immonen / Lightle"...?)   I absolutely agree about the slick presentation of the info being imparted to the reader here (things move along at a good clip!), and the part the expert visuals play in that.  Really like the texture given to that top panel by all the flags, and the layout of the panels on the bottom part of the page is really fascinating...  The two on the left are separated out, then Wally is floated over two more conjoined panels.  The whole thing makes for a very texturally rich environment to build the story!  Cool page, F M!

A great page, gotta love that kind of storytelling mastery. Congrats on that full story. As for the Immonen mention, Jason Hussa, that's because he wrote the story. ;-)

Well said, and if you want to go a step further, people can also take note of how much thinking has to go into the layout stage and determining how and where to place all the characters, as they need to be placed in such a way as to be sure that if they have any dialogue, that the word balloon pointers don't criss cross each other in a confusing mess, which is a main reason why it's so much more difficult to draw team books or books with a large supporting cast. Lightle always told a good story, visually speaking.

Lightle made every page he worked on visually interesting while still telling a story.  A combination of skills that's rare.

Gorgeous art, but I especially like the panel layout. It's very cleverly done to support all the interesting geometry of the scenes, and really punch up the cinematic nature, imo. The big splashy panel, with the little choppy scenes to create some nice action. Very nice work. Congrats!
