DescriptionOn this week’s Comic Art Live X-Men debate, Paul Smith was named one of the top five X-Men artists ever. So I thought it was a great time to post this stunning Paul Smith cover I recently acquired for X-Men Classic #87. It’s a barroom brawl--Colossus versus Juggernaut. Both penciled and inked by Smith, it re-imagines a scene originally depicted in Uncanny X-Men #183 by John Romita Jr. And much as I like JrJr's original, I like Smith's version even better. On this cover, Colossus has literally been knocked off his feet by Juggernaut and is pictured flying through the air directly at the reader. In the background, a satisfied grin crosses Juggernaut’s face. Behind Juggy, the mirror is cracked and the furniture is smashed to smithereens. To the left are Wolverine and Nightcrawler, both dressed in civvies, watching in surprise (Nightcrawler) and amusement (Logan). Smith’s layout is dynamic, his figures are beautifully drawn and his inks are spot on. IMHO, it’s a jaw-dropping cover drawn by one of the best X-Men artists ever.Social/Sharing |

I love how Smith was evolving his style at this point, going from the super clean lines he used during his first X-Men run and starting to add a brushy look to that line. Colossus vs Juggernaut is a classic power vs power matchup we all love to see and this version is quite a dynamic reinterpretation of the classic Romita Jr. cover. I love them both so much! I also have always had a soft spot in my heart for Classic X-Men, as it allowed we who only started reading comics AFTER the original Cockrum, Byrne and 2nd Cockrum runs to read every issue of those runs on a monthly basis, thereby giving us the chance to experience what it must've been like for readers to experience all those classic issues when they were initially published. EXTREMELY cool cover!!! Love how Colossus's right arm reaches up into the title lettering, and the expressions on the faces of Juggernaut, Nightcrawler and Wolverine are classic. Hey! Classic! Classic X-Men! Beautiful addition, Bill!!

The posing on the original 183 is a little awkward - it looks much better with Paul's more fluid style. Love how dynamic this reimagining is, from a time when he was putting out some of his best work. Congrats!

Intense drawing by PMS !!! I like how Nightcrawler is kind of shock. But Wolverine figures to just sit back and is thinking "Pete's got this".

Sorry and I apologize upfront, but whenever I see a kicka** Juggernaut image, this is the first thing I am thinking of. Such a classic phrase and certainly cover. Very cool! Sorry for all the cursing :-).

Bill J's 2022 Kick Ass Tour continues! Excellent PMS cover! Anything featuring Juggy always makes for a fun piece. And there's no more rollicking good fun than an old fashioned bar room brawl. Plus I really love the contradicting reactions of Kurt and Loga's facial expressions here. Priceless! Anyway, congrats buddy. Man, it's only March. Not sure how much more of this I can take Bill.

3 out of 4 panelists agree that Paul Smith is top 5. 9 out of 10 dentists agree that Colossus is going to need some dental work. 23 out of 23 commenters (so far, might as well be 100 out of 100) agree that this one is an impressive addition to an already great collection!

No one stops the Juggernaut...from another Jagerbomb! KA-SHOT! This is one of my favorite comic stories. I always loved the idea of off-duty good guys and bad guys mixing it up in bars. I don't know why, I was just a kid, but I just loved the grit of those stories. It felt so real. The animosity even carried over to when you clocked out for the day. And, this is one super sweet cover. I'm so glad to see Smith get his due, he's such a great artist. Big congrats!

Bill, this is an absolute knockout. Smitty is my favorite X-Men artist and I'm privileged to own a large commission from him, but I don't own a published cover from him. This is spectacular! Piotr's pose is just so dynamic and Juggernaut looks menacing and striking. What a cover! What an artist!

Outstanding! Great pure illustration, but love the movement, depth, and the expression on every character. Especially Wolvie :) I mean, you can just see Logan getting a chuckle out of this, right?! Standout cover, Bill - congrats!

Just a fantastic cover! The staging of all characters is just perfect. Smith's style had clearly evolved to a thicker line by then and a more illustrative approach that obviously works wonder on covers.

It's great that Paul Smith resonates with as many comics fans as he does. I've always loved his work, too. Paul's "Leave It To Chance" series is worth checking out, as well.

Outstanding cover, Bill! Paul Smith's Colossus (and Wolverine... and Nightcrawler... and...) have always been favorites, and this is a beautiful re-examination of a truly classic 'Uncanny' cover. I love Colossus's arm in front of the logo here - another brilliant add to your glazers, Bill! Thanks for sharing!

As an avid DC reader, I'd almost never pick up any of the X-books despite their massive success. I only bought one issue of CLASSIC X-MEN (or CLASSIC X-MEN for that matter) and this was that issue ! I simply couldn't ignore this incredible cover ! Congrats on adding this amazing piece to your collection ! BTW, the issue was worth buying as the actual story was very fun... one time I was happy I judged the book by it's cover !
