DescriptionA few years ago, I was at Jeff Singh's Annual Art Collectors Gathering and I got the opportunity to sit and flip through the portfolio of my pal Bob Kopman, whose collecting is primarily focused on Archie art and quality independent stuff such as Love & Rockets and Peter Bagge art. While I had personally never read either, I had long been visually attracted to the underground stylings of Bagge's work and Bob has a really nice collection of pages from Neat Stuff and Hate. It was such a treat to be able to flip through page after page of the Bagge art and doing so ended up being the catalyst for me going to my local library, who had all the trade collections, and borrowing them to read. I ended up loving the series and decided then and there that I wanted to own an original art example from it that featured the neurotic yet lovable idiot, Buddy Bradley.I decided to get this page not only because it features Buddy heavily, but also because story wise it contains a complete scene in the story, features Buddy's neurosis, and even more importantly showcases 9 consecutive facial illustrations, each one different from the last. That variety of range, all on one page, is fascinating! Furthermore, this page comes from a period of Bagge's work where he was also adding a lot of detailed cross hatching, which also complimented his cartoony style. Every now and then it's nice to break out from what you usually collect and acquire something which is radically different from the norm. Thanks for the push, Bob! Social/Sharing |

Bob's collection has a strong flavor and admittedly, I have found myself looking at Archie, Love and Rockets and Hate very fondly ever since experiencing his collection. Interesting to see that this has rubbed off on you too. Congrats on a great pick up!

What a hilarious page! Totally reminds me of all the over-thinking I have done in the past about whether a girl likes me or not. Love all the facial expressions and internal struggling going on with this character. And yes, it is definitely fun to stray from one's normal collecting patterns sometimes.

What a great Grumme...
°-°
Are mine eyes deceiving me ?!!!?
You know,I won't lie, the underground or alternative have never been for me but I can understand the appeal as Bagge is a major cartoonist.
So congrats for branching out in a totally unexpected direction ;)

I close my eyes
And see Little Buddy
Think I would die
For page of Peter Bagge
A fool could see
Just how much of a miscue
I'd get down Valerie
I'd do anything for you
I just want a notch on my belt
When I Fling a book at you
I Hate myself
Oh, I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no, yeah

Neat Stuff! I like this for 3 reasons. Cool use of the nine panel grid format, great cartooning and no nightwing or teen titans and not by a big 2 artist....i guess that is more than 3 good reasons not to Hate it. Great job Baggeing this one Buddy.

And that's a high bar, given Jeff's routinely thoughtful and insigntful comments! Great page, BTW! I read Hate religiously from issue 1 and it remains a favorite of mine. Equal parts authentic and outrageoulsy exaggerated, and completely original

I love Hate! Peter Bagges misanthropic angst dump to the world, and I enjoyed it all. The Bradley's were a great dysfunctional, angry, and typical American family. I've always enjoyed the 70s/80s flavor of the characters, too, like Bradley being a vinyl junkie. Great find. Congrats!

I really enjoy Bagge's work, although for some reason I think I've read more of his non-Hate stuff than I have of the series that made him famous. Seeing this page reminds me that I need to fix that.

So has the stuff you've read have to do with Buddy Bradley and his family, or other completely unrelated things? Because both Neat Stuff and Hate are about the Bradleys, but Neat Stuff came first and features Buddy and his sister as teenagers, whereas Hate continues theeir adventures but with Buddy and his sister now grown into young adults.

I think my first exposure to Bagge was Sweatshop for DC, which led me to Yeah!, and I then got the Dark Horse stuff (Apocalypse Nerd, Reset) when they were new, plus Everybody Is Stupid Except For Me. I also loved Founding Father Funnies and the Megalomaniacal Spider-Man. I've read the Bradleys and a few issues of Hate, but I need to read the rest of it. I bought the trades a few years ago, but they are in a box somewhere in my in-laws' basement along with other books I didn't have room for after my last move six years ago. So, someday I will read Hate.

Ruben, you got yourself a great Buddy page here. There are so many great elements of this page. You covered many of them in your description already. I'll also call out his very funny writing. Bagge is one of my favorite writers. He's writes very funny dialogbut he is also great at depicting his character's other emotions, notably anger, frustration etc.
I hope that more people discover both Hate and Neat Stuff as well as the other series that Michael McIssac mentioned. I'd also call out Bagge's three biographies: Woman Rebel: the Margaret Sanger story, Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurson Story, and Credo: The Rose Wilder Lane story. All of very interesting reads and I highly recommend them. Lastly, Bagge contributes short pieces to Reason magazine, usually about interesting historical figures. I always come away having learned something when I take the time to read them.

Thanks, Bob, firstly for deciding to bring your Bagge art to the Annual Art Collector Gathering, and then also for encouraging me to read the series. You mention Bagge's humorous way of depicting emotions, that IS indeed one of the reasons I also thought this was a perfect page for me. I did mention in my description that I loved how he had Buddy in 9 of 9 panels and with different expressions in each one.
By the way, when I had borrowed all the collected editions from the library and read them, I then immediately looked up to see what else they had by Bagge and it turned out they also had Woman Rebel: the Margaret Sanger story and Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurson Story, so I borrowed and read those as well! Credo: The Rose Wilder Lane story still hadn't come out at the time, so I still need to read that one. I've also seen and read some of the Reason contributions online and they're quite interesting.

Wow, Ruben - this is awesome! Excellent write up (of course) and the depiction of Buddy's "Eureka!" moment in panel 6 made me laugh out loud (he was obviously SO proud of the mental gymnastics he had undergone to arrive at that brilliant and logical conclusion). Ah, 'Hate': such great work. I need to partake in a re-read as well - it's been too long! Thanks for the great post, Ruben, and congrats on this beauty of a page! What a score!
