Description

Earlier this year, I was able to obtain my first artwork by the great Jackson "Butch" Guice. That piece, an Overstreet cover featuring the Winter Soldier, is now one of the prizes in my collection. Butch's work from Swords of the Swashbucklers to Ruse has been a constant source of delight and edification.

I recently had the opportunity to obtain an 11" x 17" commission from Mr. Guice. I was given the choice of any subject I wanted and up to 2 characters. My first thought was to get a Captain America vs. Arnim Zola commission. But then I came across Butch's Princess Leia variant cover on the Internet. I also saw some comments from Butch online stating that he loved playing in the Star Wars universe. I'm a massive Star Wars fan (I love the much-maligned The Last Jedi; come at me with all you got).

So I contacted Butch and asked him to draw Luke and Darth Vader in a lightsaber battle. I left it up to him on whether he wanted to depict the duel from The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. Butch chose The Empire Strikes Back. You can see the spectacular results above.

I am also including the preliminary that Butch sent me before doing the final piece. As you can see, Guice tightened the focus on the central figures of Vader and Luke. He also changed Vader's pose so that we could see more of his mask in the completed piece. Butch just excels in depicting action.

I'll make one last point and then let you enjoy the artwork. I have never met Mr. Guice. But my interactions with him over email lead me to believe he is an exceptionally conscientious person. That is not always the case with artists, but I am glad that Butch's amazing talent is matched by his equally amazing character.

You're a lucky guy !!  Guice has been a top notch artist for decades.  This turned out so great, dueling Skywalkers is a always a good Star Wars commission subject.

Thank you, Will, for your very kind comments.  "Dueling Skywalkers" should be the title of this piece!

First of all, kudos on a superb write up.  So glad that your experience with both the art and the artist were overwhelmingly positive.  And you're right, that isn't always the case.  LOL!  Anyway, so glad you went with the SW theme over the other idea (not that Butch wouldn't have done a great job with that one too).  He just knocked this WAY out of the park.  The figure work and especially those fighting poses are incredible!  Congrats buddy!

Thanks, Eric, for the very kind words about my write up.  I know you are just relieved that I didn't get another Paul Smith Kitty Pryde & Lockheed commission! ;)

Outstanding piece by one of the all-time greats.  I've loved Guice's work since first seeing it as a kid in the 1980s, and it's great to see that he hasn't lost a single step.

Thank you, Michael!  I'm a longstanding Guice fan as well.  Like Walter Simonson and Paul Smith, his drawing skills are undiminished.  Finding out that Butch is a very nice guy was just the icing on the cake.

I wouldn't say best, although I am currently one of the most active at the moment. But if you keep adding pieces like this you'll soon lap me!

Really cool as Guice boils it down to its core, this scene is a sword fight of a knight and samurai with elements of horror!

Leave it to Marcus to grasp the core of this piece.  "A sword fight of a knight and samurai with elements of horror."  Just perfect.  Thank you, my friend!

Thank you, Gal!  I agree that Guice is a rare talent who has not stagnated.  In fact, he just keeps getting better and better, as you so aptly note.
