DescriptionNeil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham took over Miracleman in mid-1990, right at the time that Gaiman was hitting escape velocity into super-stardom as a comic writer. He was just concluding the critically acclaimed ‘A Doll’s House’ storyline for ‘Sandman’ and was a few months away from ‘Sandman’ #19, a story that would win him a World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. Safe to say he was in a groove. And for Miracleman, he was perfectly paired with Mark Buckingham, who oversaw the visual aspects of their storytelling. Buckingham brought a broad range of artistic skills, materials, and visual presentation styles that perfectly matched Gaiman’s stories deconstructing the seeming utopia that Miracleman established at the end of MM #16. Gaiman and Buckingham told individual stories that allowed us glimpses into the daily realities of folks living in that ‘utopia’ – and they did so many times using key MM supporting characters as vehicles to do so. Along those lines, ‘Spy Story’ from MM #20 uses Evelyn Cream as the linkage between the story of an ordinary person and MM’s new world. Cream, an agent of a British government intelligence organization called the Spookshow, is first introduced to us in MM #3. He’s a smart and cunning killer who’s deep underground in the twisted workings of government intelligence services. ‘Spy Story’ imagines such intelligence services being dismantled and former participants needing to be rehabilitated to function properly in MM’s new world. We meet a former spy, Ruth, who learns that she has been experiencing such a program from Cream. In this story, Buckingham makes heavy usage of stats and repetitive imagery that provide a sense of remoteness and coldness to the word that Ruth is living in as she goes through her rehabilitation. The repetitive imagery also drives home the point of how hard it is for a person such as Ruth to change a pattern of behavior that is so deeply ground into her person. Overall, ‘Spy Story’ is a remarkably unique, smart and visually striking story told by two creators at the top of their games. I’m thrilled to share the entire internal page art, cover and cover prelim. Enormous thanks to Joseph Melchior and Mark Buckingham for making it all happen! Social/Sharing |

Very cool to see that this was built and crafted into a full scale collage. Rare artwork from late in the saga that was very tough to find as a comic.

Wow, what a piece of storytelling. As someone only familiar with Mark's work on Fables and Sandman, this is a really different side of his art to see. Congrats on acquiring the complete issue, and thanks for sharing!

Buckingham is such an underrated artist. This image really captures the life in which Ruth finds herself trapped.
