Description“BIKERS ARE WIMPS!” Who knew the Hulk could be funny? For a brief time at the end of the ‘80s, writer Peter David created a new persona for the Hulk, one that was different from any that had preceded it--Mr. Fixit. Joe Fixit was an enforcer for the Las Vegas Mob. He was tough and grumpy and mean. He wore rumpled suits, a fedora and fancy shoes. He dated Las Vegas showgirls and beat up anyone who got in his way. Or in his boss’ way. No one knew he was the Hulk, they all thought the Hulk was dead. But in truth, he was hiding in plain sight. It was a darkly amusing storyline bolstered by Peter David’s dark, often witty scripts. This cover, for issue #356, was drawn for a story in which Fixit was dumped by his girlfriend, Marlo Chandler. Needing to blow off a little steam, Fixit walked into a biker bar and declared loudly, “Bikers are wimps!” Of course, much mayhem ensued but the bikers were relative pushovers for Fixit and he had to look elsewhere for more challenging opponents. The cover was drawn by newcomer Jeff Purves, who was given the unenviable task of following Todd McFarlane on the Hulk. Readers didn’t take to Purves the way they had to McFarlane and he left the Hulk after 19 issues to pursue a career in animation. Mr. Fixit didn’t last much longer than Purves, but it was fun while it lasted. Ironically this cover is now listed at number 9 in Marvel Unlimited’s “25 Greatest Hulk Covers of All Time.”Special thanks to Mike Burkey, Bill Cox and The Dueling Dealers of Comic Art! Those two guys must have had one too many at the bar. Even if I knew nothing about the Hulk, I wouldn't walk up to a giant, gray, growling man! Love when I get a Bill J post as part of my balanced breakfast in the morning!

This cover is a lead pipe cinch to be one of the best by Purves. The bricks, the pinstripes, the chain, and the monster! Perfect for anyone that rides as Hulk isn't shy from showing off his own riding stance like a boss in Gangnam style.

I'm surprised that fans didn't generally take to Jeff Purves. I remember reading these great issues right off the rack and admiring the super clean lines and fine details -- though with Bob McLeod, you can't go wrong. Mr Fixit was loads of fun thanks to Peter David, and this is a perfect portrayal of the grumpy, tough Las Vegas Enforcer Hulk.

Following Todd McFarlane has to be extremely difficult. Regardless, this is a great cover. Congratulations on a fantastic pickup!

A Jeff Purves Hulk cover is already impressive but a classic cover? Well done, Sir! What a great description to match the cover too!

Yes, certainly a classic cover from that era, isn't it? I remember initially being put off by the idea of Mr Fixit, as I disliked it any time the creators would get further away from the classic, savage Hulk I grew up loving. But this part of Peter David's run is a fantastic example of the immense difference a writer can soimetimes make in getting fans to still love the book and character. It WAS absolutely fun while it lasted and deservedly a fondly remembered part of the Hulk's historical canon. Congrats, Bill!

I may be alone in preferring Purves over Mcfarlane- especially when Jeff was inked by Marie Severin. Great, fun cover... and it's wonderful that it's all art and doesn't have the hideous UPC box throwing off the balance and composition!

Imposing cover.
What's especially interesting for me is that McLeod didn't overpower Purves' art too much.

Well its not everyday that we are so lucky to see a Mr. Fixit / Hulk Cover. Peter David at his best and Purves art was the cherry at the Top. Huge Congratulations..!

McFarlane, Purves, Keown, Frank, and Peter David writing made Hulk one of the best reads from the late 80's into the 90's. Awesome cover

Congrats on this latest pickup, Bill. Peter David had a real knack for upending the status quo on the Hulk during his long run and Jeff Purves' lighter, cartoonier style really helped sell the transition to the Joe Fixit stories. A shame we didn't see more sequential work from him!

Huge congrats, Bill! Purves is way up there on my list of Hulk artists. His all too short run was packed with fun, energy, and was so unique to him in terms of stylization. You got an outstanding example here!

Dawdled when Jeff emerged about 12 years ago with covers...still kicking myself. The Peter David run is my all-time favorite Hulk. Each artist a superstar. Purves and Kieth were my two faves. Big congrats, Bill!

Jeff Purves took a shot in a difficult transition where fans were sure to gripe. He nailed it here and Joe Fixit was and is memorable to this day.

Purves has been so underrated for decades, his short run on hulk was (unfortunately l) between Mcfarlane and Keown ones, so people tends to forget him, but in my opinion he was second-to-none... and this cover is a perfect example of his immense talent.

I always liked Purves style on Hulk. The clean lines were a refreshing change from all the hyper-rendering of that era
