Description

With today’s debut of season three of The Umbrella Academy show on Netflix, I thought it would be a good time to post this piece featuring Ryan Ottley’s interpretation of the comic book version of the White Violin.

I really enjoyed the first two seasons of the show, so here’s hoping the third season lives up to its predecessors. As for the comic, as a huge fan of My Chemical Romance, I’ll read anything by Gerard Way (not to mention Gabriel Ba, whose work I’ve admired since picking up the first issue of Casanova many years ago).

I think Ottley did a sensational job here. This was one of those pieces where when I opened the package from Felix Comic Art, I just stared in amazement at what was in front of me. I don’t know if the scan fully does it justice.

I'm not familiar with the show, but this striking piece definitely makes me curious!

Wow - this piece has an ethereal beauty.  Ryan Ottley continues to amazer me.  And yeah, I'm not familiar with the show, but I will check it out!

I recommend that you and anyone else who hasn't seen the show check it out.  The first episode is pretty indicative of the series, so if you watch the first episode and like it, you'll probably like the show.  If you don't like the first episode, the second episode probably won't change your mind.

Stunning piece! This would've made a great cover for the series.

Fantastic, graceful piece.

I love Gabriel Ba's work but definitely wouldn't mind seeing Ottley tackle Umbrella Academy!

Yeah, I'd love to see Ottley cut loose in the world of the Umbrella Academy.  Maybe some day?

When I was a young boy

My father took me into the city

To see the Hargreeves band

He said, "Son, when you grow up

Would you be the Vanya number seven

Now Viktor and a man?"

He said, "Chill with Netflix then?

The streamers, and all the non-subscribers

The plans that they have made?"

"Because one day, I'll leave illustration

To lead you into summer

Season three's back today"

Sometimes I get to claiming
The art of Ryan Ottley
And other times Felix just tells me no
And through it all, I'd buy them all
I'll show you my receipts
And when they're gone, we want you all to know

Ryan Ottley's on, Ryan Ottley's on
And though Ben's dead and gone, believe me
White Violin will carry on

We'll carry on
And in my art, It can't contain it
Binge the show to explain it

This is brilliant!  I read it hearing Gerard's voice in my head.  Bravo!

She's got such a great design and this is a nice change from all the gore and monstruosities Ottley is known and loved for.

(I thought the first season was ok-ish but not enough to continue watching-as I found the comic series is much better)

If only I knew. My wife is having me watch the series right now. Episode 3 first season so far. Will let you know if my chords start changing pitch by the end of it. Love the artwork though.

I'd been plowing trough the entirety of Ottley's Invincible run up until I got too busy too quickly producing content for my YouTube channel and have the final 3 volumes laying here beside me which soon need to be returned to the library, but I've loved it so far. This is quite a different approach from his invincible work, but it's still beautiful. Really wonderful! If I ever have the time to sit and binge tv shows again, I'll have to try Umbrella Academy!

I can sympathize with the lack of time for TV shows.  It seems like everyone is talking about the latest season of Stranger Things, and I'm still trying to find the time to finish season two.  People I know seem to have mixed feeling about the Umbrella Academy show.  Some love it (I do), and others not so much.  I do think it's a show that does a decent job of setting itself up in the first episode, so as I mentioned in another comment, I think that if you watch the first episode you'll know whether or not the show is for you.  As for the artwork, I was blown away by it in part because it didn't look like Ottley's Invincible work (and I'm a fan of that as well - the comic and the Amazon Prime animated series).

I'm glad you mentioned the the 1st episode does a good job of letting the viewer know if they will want to keep watching or not. As time is precious, I'm always willing to give a new show the proverbial "an episode at a time" test. The second I feel it just isn't for me, I'm gone. I'll also have to eventually check out the Invincible tv show!

LOVE this!  Love it!  Put me squarely into the "adores the television show" column, please (as well as the comic, of course).  As you and Rubén stated, time is precious (I can't keep up with Bill's terrific CAF programmimg, I haven't caught one of Felix's amazing unboxing videos live yet, and because of travel am already behind a couple episodes of Rubén's... and he's done three as of this writing), but I have seen UA season one twice and will be watching season two for a second time with my wife when our schedules calm down.  But, now, about this ART...

Gorgeous piece!  I love Ryan's take on (frankly) the most memorable costume design in recent memory.  Beautiful shading and tones on the main figure, and the dry brush strokes around the edges of the black feel very natural and organic, like an instrument's wood and/or strings to me.  Love the execution here on this show-stopping piece.  GREAT piece, Michael - congrats!  Standing O all around!

Yeah, given time constraints these days, I very rarely watch anything more than once, and I'm usually behind on things (heck, I just watched the first two seasons of "Stranger Things" for the first time this month).  That being said, the first season of UA is one of the rare modern shows where I watched it twice, and I have watched the dance sequence from the season three premiere probably four times at this point.  Really great show, and really great description of the art on your part - I need to start quoting you in the descriptions!

Thanks!  Yeah, it's one of the few pieces that I have where the scan really doesn't do it justice.  There's more depth to the image in person.

This is a great piece by Ottley -- the figure is so striking and the use of negative space is masterful.
