DescriptionWhat a delight it was to run into Don Simpson at Heroes!Amazingly enough, he had brought along some pages from a classic Megaton Man issue, no. 9, which features a dizzying array of other Megaton clones --- Captain Megaton Man, Golden Age Megaton Man, Silver Age Megaton Man, Russian Megaton Man, etc. --- and a host of other outlandish characters. Every page contains at least one plot twist, and themes include political and social commentary, lampooning Marvel tropes such as editorial asides and superheroes with relationship problems, partying space aliens, and so on. Here's a battle page with our hero the Mighty Man of Molecules (AKA Megaton Man) facing off against Bad Guy (who has replaced his "B" with a "G" and rebranded as "Good Guy") as Yarn Man materializes in the background after a trip to the distant future. Can you tell I loved this series? My favorite aspect of it was, and remains, Don's unique and humorous cartooning style. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

Really great cartooning by Simpson! He knew exactly how to exaggerate anatomy to awesome effect. Huge congrats!

A blast from the past from my favorite year! Such a fun page. Artless Kayfabe effect, Megaton Man issue 9 spikes to $30 on ebay.

This is a really cool page. I was unfamiliar with Don's work until this past weekend and I am glad that has changed. Congrats on another good one!

A big part of why I loved the 80's was not only because a lot of fun stuff was happening in mainstream comics, but also because it was an era of experimentation with independent publishers. I LOVED Megaton Man! Not only were the stories a lot of fun, but I loved the way Simpson used a highly realistic rendering style and fused it with highly exaggerated anatomy to keep the overall look cartoony. Great stuff!

Good eye! Simpson tried to obscure him with dazzle camouflage, as you can see in the scan of the color page.
