DescriptionA bit of Jack Davis artistic EC magic from ‘Haunt of Fear’, issue 22 (Nov/Dec 1953). Penned by Al Feldstein, the story, entitled ‘Model Nephew’, begins with the Crypt-Keeper introducing us to a greedy nephew who can’t wait for his uncle to die and inherit his wealth. The only thing he does not get? The uncle’s collection of model ships in bottles. Which, in typical EC fashion, relates to how the narcissistic nephew meets his end. Davis was noted for his take on the Crypt-Keeper. Created by Feldstein, Davis gave him a much more grizzled and scary visual appearance, as seen in this story’s title page with his hairy warts and drooling, mangled mouth.Jack Davis (December 2, 1924 – July 27, 2016) was a prolific cartoonist and illustrator whose work spanned advertising, film, books, records and, most importantly to folks in our collecting world, comic books. But, work in comics did not come easy. He was rejected from numerous comic book publishers before taking on freelance work for William Gaines' EC Comics in 1950 and contributing art to most of their titles. But before landing at EC, he considered giving up and becoming a forest ranger or a farmer...which would have precluded him from being one of the founding cartoonists for Mad in 1952! Hard to imagine Mad without him. While Davis was known for being a very fast artist, he was even better known for his usage of brush to add mood and visual depth to his work, which is very evident in his work on this story. A deeply skilled artist, when he kicked in the afterburners, he brought dynamic use of light, shade and texture to create visual imagery that many attempted to copy given its uniqueness and visual impact. Davis was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2005. He also received the National Cartoonists Society's Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Special thanks to DC! Social/Sharing |
