DescriptionHere's a totally badass Catwoman cover by Adam Hughes. I love this dynamic image of Selina Kyle on a sleek motorcycle blasting her way through the streets of Gotham City. This is the Selina Kyle readers have come to love—Fierce, determined and independent. Adam Hughes has always understood this side of Catwoman. Which is why his run of covers on Catwoman was one of the best depictions of femme noir ever. When I look over his covers, from Catwoman #44 in August 2005 to Catwoman #82 in October 2008, I have a hard time choosing my favorite. But this cover would certainly be one of the top contenders. Hughes really shows his artistic chops here. Check out the tightly detailed motorcycle. Using thick blacks, lush grays, and elaborate crosshatching, he gives the bike real dimension and heft. But Hughes never forgets to keep the focus on Selina. The expression on her face gives away her sheer joy at riding as well as her ferocity. Throughout his run of covers, Hughes imbued Catwoman with a real personality and made her much more than just a cat burglar or Batman’s love interest. He recognized that she was her own person--a bright, ambitious, daring young woman. Hughes has said he modeled the look of the character after Audrey Hepburn but I think for this cover he added a little Steve McQueen.Social/Sharing |

Your vintage art is amazing, but I love it when you toss a modern day gem into your posts. Plus, I'm a sucker for "heroes on motorcycles" images. This is just beautiful, congrats!

That crosshatching on the bike is awesome to define the shape of molded translucent fiberglass without any right angles in it at all.

The combination of techniques, especially as used to separate the subject from the background, is terrific. All that cross hatch would be really fun to examine in person. No one does a year end party popper like you buddy.

Being a Harley owner myself I love seeing heroes and villains on motorcycles. I agree with the other posters that the crosshatching is quite excellent. Congrats on an awesome pick up!!!

So cool to see Adam experimenting with various effects. Even if the crosshatching isn't immediately obvious in the published cover, I'm sure Adam knows. And that's enough.

You definitely wouldn't want to see Selina in your rear view mirror like this...or would you? Hughes delivers the goods as per usual with his. Catwoman covers. One of the best of the run.

Well, if this is Audrey Hepburn, this has to be the motorbike she rode in Roman Holiday! But then, whatever happened to Gregory Peck? Aw, never mind... And I think AH is right about the connection between Audrey and Selina!

Just a gorgeous piece! The artistry in the cross hatching is wonderful and painstaking in how precise it is. The use of light and shadow to accentuate the speed and action of the piece is wonderful. A frame worthy piece...but let's be honest your entire collection is frame worthy. Love it.

I've always loved sports bikes, so you already sold me on this cover with that! But add to that the fantastic crosshatching on the bike, a technique not commonly used by Hughes, and it puts this cover over the top! May you ride with this one like your hair is on fire, Bill!

Can't go wrong with an Adam Hughes Catwoman cover. The mix of styles/media on this is a delight, but that cross-hatching is next level. Congrats!

The mix of techniques and media adds a contrast that really is a sight to behold! Copic marker background, straight block blacks and negative space, then hatch-y goodness! Killer Catwoman all around, Bill, congrats!

What I love about this hobby is seeing all that was lost in the cover. Hughes spent so much time on that frenetic crosshatching and you can barely tell on the published cover. That crosshatching really reminds me of Art Adams that now I'm inspired to create a super android artist named Art Adams Hughes.

Catwoman on a crotch rocket, even the Bat would find that a challenge but you got it! The subject matches the vehicle, that matches the kinetic energy and adrenalin of this piece. I love how it's nearly spilling outside of the paper, ready to burst free and scream down the street.

Man, Hughes did not phone this one in. The crosshatching on the bike is insane and gives so much depth to the piece. The contrast with the untouched sections for the washed out highlights is really stunning. Great pickup as usual, Bill!

Gorgeous cover, Bill! Like all great ones, it tells a story (while simultaneously making you want to pick up the book to learn more). For me here, the story is the test drive of this bike by Selina. How do you think -that- went, factoring in the "Gotham's greatest cat burglar" angle...? :) We could actually be mid-test drive right here! "Gotta stop by the bank and... pick up something...". Beautiful rendering of the bike here, too: while Selina hatches a plan, Adam's hatching on the bike (and Selina's right side) is just as tight, and I love the bold black streak of the front tire. The reflections in Selina's goggles add to the story, too: speeding past some folks, probably in -very- close quarters (or in an alleyway leading to a street...?). Hughes cover mega-score to close out 2023, as 2024 races towards us! Zoom! Congrats, Bill!!

Reading your description, " I think for this cover he added a little Steve McQueen. " I think she ran him over. I can't see him. Not even his corpse. He must be really flat, as well as very, very small.

Whoah! Missed this when you added it!! My phone almost ran out of memory to get to the end of the comments. I don't know how long it took to ink this but judging from the cross-hatching, WEEKS!!! It's INCREDIBLE! And none of it shows in the published piece which is why these originals are so impressive!
