DescriptionIn 1976, DC released the "Super DC Calendar", which put a fun twist on a normal branded calendar by designating nearly every day of the year as a certain character's birthday, or a date when something significant in DC continuity happened. How does that play into this gorgeous piece I've posted today? Well, Gene Gonzales likes to post art of specific characters on their "birthdays" according to the 1976 calendar, and sometimes that means he'll create a whole new piece so he has one to post. This lovely Saturn Girl is one such case, since according to the calendar (see additional images), today is her birthday! Or it WILL be her birthday, in the 30th century. My gallery has been sorely lacking in pieces featuring Saturn Girl in her iconic "disco bikini" (which is THE definitive look of the Great Fabric Shortage of the 2970s), so I was very glad to pick this one up. While the outfit is definitely loud and in-your-face, I like the contrast of Imra's more static pose and calm, confident smile, which are very in-keeping with her more reserved personality. The colourwork here is gorgeous, as always. I especially love the layers of colour used to shade Imra's hair, and the awesomely bright pink used to give her most iconic outfit its signature punch. Love that outline that makes her glow against the background! This costume came in Action #392 in 1970! It was a fan creation and later on Dave Cockrum took it over to Marvel for Storm!

I do so love seeing how much of Cockrum's LSH work was the inspiration for what he would do with X-Men.
And I agree that the outline really ties the whole piece together! It's this pretty salmon orange colour that goes really well with the skintones and the bright pink.

Really impressive color work throughout from the skin tone to the costume and hair/facial features. It looks so clean and refined. Gene killed it on this gorgeous piece! Happy (belated) birthday Saturn Girl and nice new addition.

Happy Birthday to Imra !! I've always loved the 'birthday suit' version of her costume.

Ha! A "birthday suit" on two fronts! What are the odds?
