Description

WHO'S AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD WEREWOLF? Here's a killer 1975 Werewolf by Night cover, drawn by two of the greatest artists of the '70s--Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson! Interestingly, this is one of only two covers that Starlin and Wrightson ever worked on together and it’s absolutely stunning! The cover story is titled “Death in the House of Hell,” and features Jack Russell, aka the Werewolf by Night, being attacked by ANOTHER WEREWOLF! (Classic Bronze Age plot twist, right?) I love the overhead POV Starlin used here, looking down on the scene as the new Werewolf knocks Russell through a third story window while two women watch in horror from the ground below. And check out Wrightson’s lush and detailed inks----The brushwork on the hairy torso of the Werewolf, the crosshatching on the shadows inside the castle, the negative shadows under the villagers' feet---It’s gorgeous work. Wrightson is a master when it comes to inking and he puts all that experience to work here. IMHO it's a spectacular cover by a phenomenal team and I’m delighted to add it to my collection.

Strangely enough, the first thing I noticed was their initials on the stone wall. How perfectly symbolic. Reminds me of two childhood sweethearts who carve their name into a tree because they believe they are sharing something special and timeless. How apropos. Congratulations my friend.

You SHOULD be delighted to own it, Bill! The layout/composition is incredibly dramatic and who doesn't love the classic "Wait, there's two of them?!?" plot twist? I also like that the inks are beautiful, but Wrightson always took care to still follow most of the penciller's lines when he inked someone else so that the finished product didn't look like his work alone.

Screams break from Starlin
Bringing you the Wolf by Night
Wrightson is inking
His ink brush to kill the light

Then when he's found who he's inking for
Starlin in awe and you'll hear him
Bark at the moon

Fears and the torment
Cover situation’s grave
Now this has Starlin
This is art you have to save

Those that the beast is looking for
Russell in fall and you'll fear him
Bark at the moon
Hey yeah, bark at the moon

OOOOOHHHHH!! Bronze age Marvel covers are so iconic, and the artists aren't too shabby either. And if. you want, I can pretend that is Marc Spector on the cover, making this Moon Knight's 3rd App!

Your excellent description says it all - who could resist this gem when it was on the newsstand? Shame they didn't work together more often. That said, I made the mistake of selling the Dreadstar & Company #2 cover - perhaps you can find it and have both Starlin/Wrgihtson covers

When "Moon Boy" Starlin tries to muscle in the horror genre, Werewolf-By-Night Wrightson knocks the "Star Man" back to the cosmos! I can't help but see this cover not as a collaboration but as a rivalry!

WOW!!  Great perspective here, enhanced by the rich, lush inking mastery of Berni Wrightson.  And that title?  "Death in the House Of Hell"?!?  Yeah, they don't make them like -that- anymore, either... :)  Fantastic patch of light that the Werewolf is springing from (so that the viewer can read what's going on at just a glance) as well as the Werewolf's beautifully rendered fur...  Prime Bronze Age goodness, Bill; a once-in-a-blue-moon power piece pairing that is right at home (in the House of Hell!) in your brain-melting collection! :) Sincere congrats, sir!

Werewolf By Night was my favorite comic as a kid due to artist Mike Ploog. Sticking it out through the Don Perlin era yielded occasional happy surprises, and this cover is among the best of them.
