I would ssay that the battle looks even more fearsome in this raw pencil form where you can imagine more of the violence!

Many pencil and ink studies have more life in them than the finished painting. I have studies back to the 18th century and it was the same then. Or maybe it's just me who likes pencil/ink/wash loose idea drawings.

My feeling is that these raw pieces just have more ambiguity to them that lets the mind easily fill in the the gaps rather than a full polish that forces our mind to fully accept the artists' complete vision.
