DescriptionAny Bill Watterson original Calvin and Hobbes art is more rare than even a talking tiger! And Sundays even more so. And hand-colored examples even more so than that! Add in to that heady mix that this is an absolute classic from the first two years of this beloved strip's publication! We have only ever offered a single Calvin and Hobbes Sunday previously–a full 10 years ago—and we've honestly never heard of one coming to market that's even close in quality to this example, which features both main characters in every single panel. This is a beautifully self-contained, heartwarming, and action-packed adventure as perfected by Watterson. In short, it's an absolutely perfect example in every way—which makes absolutely perfect sense when the provenance is considered, as it was gifted by Watterson to his longtime editor, Lee Salem, who worked with the artist at Universal Press Syndicate from the outset of the strip's conception until its conclusion. It is a well-known fact that Watterson has carefully held onto his original artwork, despite many generous offers to part with a strip. This one was presented by Watterson personally, like each example we've come across, and is signed and personalized "To Lee" in the first panel. Obviously, gifts of this sort were extremely selective, explaining the scarcity on the market. This Sunday features the beloved racing-down-the-hill troupe (be it on a sled or wagon), and also has a charming "Time Travel" element to it. The series often celebrated the tender joys and wonders of the world, as only a young child (and their talking tiger) could experience it. All the hallmark elements of the most popular post-Peanuts comic strip are in full effect, and Watterson's cartooning mastery is on incredible display throughout, further highlighted by Watterson's sensitive and intricate hand-coloring—into which he obviously put a great deal of detailed work. This is one those very special pieces that we couldn't be prouder to offer: an absolute masterpiece with everything going for it, and it's impossible to imagine a more perfect example being available.
