DescriptionTales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #5 Pg. 2 Title SplashPencils by Jim Lawson Inks by Ryan Browne Written by Peter Laird & Kevin Eastman Turtle Head Sketches and Signatures on the back of the art board by Peter Laird, Kevin Eastman, Jim Lawson, and Ryan Browne Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) was an anthology series set in the TMNT universe that was released by Mirage Studios during alternating months from the mainline TMNT series by Eastman & Laird. It started in 1987 and the first volume of it ran for 7 issues. It provided an opportunity to expand the TMNT character roster to include such characters as Nobody, Leatherhead, The Rat King, Complete Carnage, and Radical - most of which went on to feature in the main title. In this issue (and title splash that references it) we are focused on Complete Carnage and Radical. This splash is mostly setting the scene of NYC but you do see a much zoomed out shot of Complete Carnage on it. Jim Lawson and Ryan Browne handled art duties for the issue, and the story was written by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. All 4 of those creators have a hand on this OA page. On the back of the art board are drawn mini Turtle head sketches and signatures from all 4 as well (see additional images) which makes it extra cool for me as a TMNT fan! Social/Sharing |

Thanks! And me too. I own the ENTIRE Mirage Studios run (with the exception of a couple 2nd and 3rd prints of certain issues I'm still trying to track down which has taken forever ahaha) in my comic book collection :) - you probably saw it the same time as me back in 2018 maybe, which is when I won it at auction

Some of these early TMNT pages had a gritty, underground feel that helped to ground the series in an authentic world. Not easy to do when you have ninja turtles and mutants running around!

Very well said! For something so far fetched it still felt somewhat grounded - especially the 80s stuff!

This page cries out Early TMNT! I think it's great.

Is there a Lawson
Drawing back of page?
The great TMNT
All the names on display
Well Jim's too late, no better one
Ink wash you, the carnage is Browne
Will you miss me
When I leave you Ryan?
Will you tell your friends
In tinted duo line?
Well it's ninjas now, and I'm on Eastman
I don't want you, the carnage is done
The Complete rumors
That my sense of humor is lacking in splash page
To me that's no patience, it's tantamount to Lawson
See what you anticipate
You need to find someone draw in time
As I am to your games
And maybe you'll find out Radical’s about
And it can drive you insane
Ooh the carnage is done
And now I feel it's too late
The carnage is done
It's over
Now Laird’s on the run
And Kavi you and I know
The carnage is done
I feel it's too late
The carnage is done

Gorgeous page! This is one of those examples of pages that are just beautiful even if it doesn't have the main characters in it! I love all the detail and the the different tones on the page!!

I think one of the things I fell in love with the most from an artistic point of view when I began reading/collecting TMNT with issue #4, was the fact that they always used duo-shade boards. It always gave the work an extra added dimension with the tonal touch and it made the books stand out among everything else on the stands in those days. The bonus sketches on back of the page are so awesome!

Whoa! This radiates vintage off the page in the best possible way!

They better get that yard cleaned up before the by-law officer shows up.
