DescriptionOK---here's what started the madness with me, way back in 1971, when I was 9 years old. This is the absolute first monster magazine I ever bought off the newsstands. I remember the scene like it was just yesterday. My father was a criminal attorney, and he did a fair amount of business upstate NY. I was always happy when he had a way to have me tag along! On the return from one such trip, I remember stopping off at a candy/magazine store on a busy street in Brooklyn. It was pouring rain out. My dad asked if I wanted anything--and I decided to go with him into the store to look for myself. My mind was saying 'maybe I'll get a new Mad magazine or a puzzle book'. As soon as I entered the store, this goddess of a girl (who was probably all of 18!)came across the counter as I was looking at the magazines hanging on the wall. (I knew I liked her; but at that point I didn't know why!). Anyway---forget the Mad magazine...forget the Archies...forget the puzzle books (those were for kids)...I look at said goddess and asked for the Creepy magazine that was a bit higher up on the shelves than I would've been comfortable getting. So she got it for me! This started my love affair---with the magazines! I never saw that girl again!!!!!Social/Sharing |

Great story! I have fond teenage-years memories of this issue too, with its Wally Wood story (and I even owned a page from that story, once upon a time!). This Kenneth Smith cover must be a surreal dream to gaze at in person, congrats!

"Prelude to Armageddon"...one of the best Wood Warren stories. I had a few chances to grab a page from that myself Mark. That was before "just" an individual page would've done it for me. I wanted full stories. Now I'd give an arm for one of those pages!!!!! Thanks for the comment. Isn't that what collecting should be all about...

Marc, you can sure say that again, isn't that what collecting should be all about, at least partly? One collector commenting to another and admiring his new piece, yes! Collecting has provided many of these kinds of enjoyable exchanges about art over the years for me. (PS, would you believe I once owned the art to two complete Wood stories too, including his classic, "The Curse." It boggles me wee mind now, when I think of it.....(*sigh*)

Congratulations on a great Kenneth Smith cover, I love his work and have done so since his Phantasmagoria days when I was a teenager!

I confess I am not mad about the cover – it's okay and all – but the accompanying story and the assocciations the cover has for you is sensational. I think we have all had an experience along the same lines. Thank you for letting us know what yours was.

I actually agree with you. It's not my absolute favorite Creepy cover. But, I won't say it pales in comparison to the others hanging next to it. Yet in person, it is surprising nicer, as many paintings are. But the nostaligia is what throws this over the top for me. Too many collectors "love" what everbody else is chasing. Sometimes there's merit in it---other times I look at the specific piece being proudly displayed, and I scratch my head...

I'll bet this one is very impressive in person. I can see so much more from your pic than the published cover. You have an awesome collection, the best. How is this one in person?

Amazing---most covers are nicer in person than how they printed up. This is a watercolor. It's a bit subdued compared to how it printed up. But it's not faded at all. Warren definitely brightened up many covers when he was publishing them. Yet, regardless, side by side, the original has much more to it that printing, especially back then, couldn't replicate
