DescriptionIC3 Pre-Show Commission!!!I descended on New Haven, CT for the second annual Indie Comics Creator Con to check out a ton of indie comics and their creators! And of course I couldn't pass up the chance to get some Stingray commissions! John isn't just showing us Stingray here; he's telling a story. Pin ups are great, but I am a fan of comics and comic art. This is essentially a single panel/page comic, and I love it. There's also the YOINK and YANK sound effects. I've been getting commissions for over a decade at this point and I think this is the first to have sound effects. I'm not saying that all commissions need them but, THIS IS COMIC ART! And I love the concept: Stingray is the world's foremost oceanographer and a part time super hero. It makes sense that he loves the ocean and all of the life it contains and would want to protect it. Here we see him as a hands on eco-warrior and it's freaking cool! Beyond just telling a story, this piece has feeling. Stingray is clearly pissed, as evidenced by his furrowed brow showing through the mask. The bearded whaler is so scared his eyes are bugging out of his head. And the killer whale is looking mighty hungry... for revenge. Inks, watercolor, copic markers, colored pencil, posca paint markers on 9x12 board. John is an art teacher and is currently working on his first graphic novel - Crawler. Powerful piece and commissions that tell a story are far better than someone standing!

get those Whalers!!! his different mix of mediums blend together really nicely for a finished piece. the slightly muted color pallette matches the seriousness/tone of the setting and situation happening on the canvas, and the sound effects are a great enhancement to the feel that this is a splash page or individual panel to a story like you mentioned. very cool concept for a Stingray piece and executed extremely well!

I love it, Newell! Really nice colors and lighting scheme. I, too, love covers that tell stories, especially since the comics industry moved away from those covers in favour of "movie poster pinups" for the past generation.

Thanks! That means a lot. I grew up on the story telling covers. Nice to know it paid off :)
