DescriptionOn this powerful page where Surfer tries, yet again, to escape the barrier Galactus put around Earth, Sal Buscema shows that, while he may not be his brother John, he isn't very off when he really wants to try.Social/Sharing |

What a powerful & poignant series of images of the Silver Surfer trying to break free of his imprisonment. Seriosuly one of the best Surfer pages I've ever seen! Sal Buscema really nailed this one. Major congrats!

You know the page rejoice in flight
Lines divides the page
Tried Freedom, rides the sky
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
We chased Buscema here
Dug Sal's silverware
Can you still recall time he cried?
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Hey!
Come on, yeah

Each panel is not only gorgeous, but is a master class in form and pose. When you factor in that it's Surfer encountering a cosmic barrier, and not just a character walking on the ground, the result is stunning.

I love the Silver Surfer and the whole mythology built around him. This is a gorgeous page by Sal Buscema focused entirely on his fruitless attempts to escape the prison he is been trapped on--The Earth. It's a little like the escape scenes in the movie "The Great Escape" where Steve McQueen tries again and again to escape the prison camp and every time he is returned to his cell. The important thing isn't whether you escape or not, it's whether you keep trying. Same thing with the Surfer--It's his neverending attempts to escape that tell you the kind of being he is. He may be defeated, but he'l never stop trying. Stunning art by Sal Buscema, a highly underrated comic book artist. Great pick-up, congrats!
