DescriptionI was born too late to enjoy the original telling of the Volume 1 "What If?" stories, but my father bought me a TPB that re-told many of the best ones. This one was my favorite. Finally a tale where we can see what the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix could actually do in all her glory! She defeats the X-Men, then Galactus, and finally she destroys the world! What fun. Thanks to Dino for hooking me up with a super-nostalgic page for me! You rock, Dino! Now I have to work on getting the stats/overlay re-made. Social/Sharing |

Bingham draws a wicked Phoenix. Even the Watcher looks badazz here.

Looks great unencumbered by all the stats! But it'll be nice to have the option by putting them on an overlay. By the way, what is the title of the collection your dad bought you? I don't remember any of the What If material ever being collected until just the last 2 years...Congrats on landing this!

Really fantastic piece! I don't think I've seen this before, and Bingham does a great job of channeling a classic X-men look. Congrats!

Beautiful piece! Marvel had not fully exploited the popularity of the X-Men with crossovers and special events during this era, so the rabid fandom were tracking down everything the X-Men appeared in. This is one of the greatest and high end of those few appearances. With the revelation of the original plans of having Jean live in "Phoenix: the Untold Story" one shot, this, like all the best "What Ifs?", added to the debate and the greatness of the original storyline.

Phoenix never dies. Thats why shes called Phoenix. She will never truly die as long as the publishers can make money from her. The possibility of profit. This is a super image from a favourite comic of mine.

When I first read this issue back in the mid-1980s, I felt like it was Marvel's way of saying "hey kids, stop complaining that we killed Phoenix - look how bad it would have been if she lived!" Beautiful splash page - Bingham seems to be one of those super talented artists who somehow flies below the radar in discussions of the greats from that period.

The team on the left look great but I LOVE the shot of Jean on the right, with the Phoenix right above her. Powerful yet elegant in all of her glory! Doesn't need the lettering per se, but yup, would be great to see via overlay! Congrats!

The imagaery is so strong on this page that without the text/stats it really feels like a cover. Congrats on finding a piece of your childhood from a classic What If issue and good luck with the stat work!
