Description

Cover dated September 1998.

I picked this up early in my OA collecting. Why did I get it? Because it’s Jackson Guice and I thought it looked cool (and a tip of the hat to Scott Koblish as well).

There should be a Best of CAF award for best Iron Fist page by Guice. This would be a real contender for it. It may also be my only chance to win a Best of CAF award unless I succeed in my plan to buy tons of Jack Kirby art after winning a lawsuit against McDonalds for using my likeness for Mayor McCheese.

What a small world!  I'm thinking of suing McDonalds for using my likeness for the character of Grimace!  (I used to paint a lot of purple houses during summer breaks, and that stuff just does NOT come off...plus I look like Grimace.  Or Grimace looks like me.  I'll let the lawyers decide.) But I digress.  Great Iron Fist page!  Very cool having his face framing the entire left side like that.  Definite kudos to Scott Koblish for the fantastic inking.

I think it's clear at this point that Ray Kroc had a device that enabled him to look into the future to steal the likenesses of comic book art collectors for use as corporate mascots.  Makes perfect sense.

Class Action it up because without the mask my Hamburgler likeness is impecable lol. That and they still owe me for their fraudulent monopoly games. Great piece and love the profile over the panels.

I credit McDonald's Monopoly with teaching me that life isn't fair.

As far as narrative devices go vis-a-vis the flashback, it's hard to beat the "full profile" shot, and it is used to GREAT effect here.  How did I never know that he had a sister named "Miranda"?  Miranda Rand?  Is that what happens when you're born to billionaires surrounded by people on their payroll unwilling to advise against such a move...?  Looks like.  But looks good, too!  Nice work by Guice and Koblish and a keen early OA pick up for you!  Nice grab, Michael - congrats!

I never read this series, so I'm going to guess the reason you never knew Danny had a sister is because they invented her for this series. But let us know, Michael! In any case, I really like the Guice profile image.

"Miranda"?  Miranda Rand? Roseanne? Roseanne Roseannadanna?

Meet you all the way! Rosanna, yeah!

Yup, her name is Miranda Rand.  I won't judge because I considered naming my son Isaac (my wife said no).

Actually, Miranda Rand is a creation of none other than the team of Claremont and Byrne from prior to their collaboration on the X-Men.  The scene on this page is a flashback to Miranda's first appearance in Iron Fist (first series) #2.  I don't think she appeared again until this 1998 mini.

I also feel the need to mention that Toto deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Oh, thanks for the reminder. I read those stories, but not in an age. Plus, if that was her one and only appearance until this one, it was even more reason for it to completely slip my mind.

As for Toto, I can't say I agree. Not that I'm all that familiar withtheir work aside fro mthe few hits they had, but after video killed the radio stars, I don't think any of them made the Hall of Fame. I mean if any of those "arena rock" bands deserves to be in, wouldn't REO Speedwagon deserve it far more than Toto?

I think this post does a pretty good job making the case for why Toto deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.  Besides their own albums (for which they've accumulated six Grammy Awards), the members of the band (particularly Steve Lukather, David Paich and the Porcaro brothers) deserve recognition for their collective work on many huge albums of other artists during the 1970s and 80s (including Michael Jackson's "Thriller").  I think there's a group of bands from that era that have been unfairly lumped together for exclusion from the HoF - Toto, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and Styx are at the top (Journey and the Doobie Brothers were in that grouping until their relatively recent and long overdue inductions).  It's similar to the Hall's disrespect for heavy metal, with bands like Iron Maiden, Motörhead and Slayer kept out despite being eligible for induction for decades.

Isaac McIsaac - I LOVE that.  Maybe we could put it up for a CAF vote and you could win that one!  (I feel if the results came out FOR Isaac as the first name, it would really be a win for -all- of us...)

(when my boy was born, I made a run for him to be christened Abraham Sapien Hussa.  My wife, to her eternal credit, at least kept a straight face when she gave that one the ol' heave ho...)

I have friends who are -enormous- 10cc fans who say the same thing (for the same reasons)... :)

Thanks for the article link, it was a good easy read. Listen, that's more information than I ever knew about Toto and it's all very interesting and worthy of recognition. Is it worthy of Hall of Fame level recognition? I honestly don't know. But I certainly agree with what you said about all those other bands that the HoF has continuously ignored. It's ridiculous, but these "institutions" alway seem to do (or not do) things based on behind the scenes politics, which is why I don't take them all that seriously.

I think 10cc suffers from the same issue that has impacted other bands like Thin Lizzy - while they have been huge acts in other parts of the world, in the U.S. they are mostly known for one song.  This may result in the Hall of Fame voters not fully grasping their influence (Roxy Music and T. Rex were inducted only recently, likely because their influence outshone their record sales and the voters focus more on the latter).

The Rock Hall of Fame has long been dominated by the preferences of Jann Wenner, so bands or types of music that he doesn't care for have much more of an uphill battle getting in.  The fact that the Pixies aren't already in is a crime.  That being said, despite the institution's credibility being in question at times, the induction ceremonies are a lot of fun, and I've been lucky enough to attend two of them.

Come to see Iron Fist Miranda
She'll be there to wave to you
In the hope that you're a contender
We will vote you there.

Find out that she was the sister, a killer that you gave voters
Scott did the inks that we both did before now, Dan who forgave her

Now you see Jackson's art drawing
Now you hear McDonald's call
Got yourself a lawyer for suing
I'm lovin' it all

As Neil Young would say (according to the Internet), "the true martial artist yields to the weak, while withstanding the strong.” Words for Iron Fist and McDonalds to live by.

This certainly win my vote for "best Iron Fist page by Guice". I'm a big fan of Guice and this is an awesome example of his '90s style !

Well there you go. The Wenner thing is precisely what I meant about politics often keeping people out of ANY of the existing HoFs, be it music, art, sports, etc. But I agree that the induction ceremonies are always fun. So great that you've been able to attend a couple of them!

Wow! Very cool Iron Fist page. Love this profile of Iron Fist juxtaposed against three kickass scenes of his sister Miranda, fighting with the skills of a demon. Just a terrific page from a great series. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
