DescriptionChris Ware's New Yorker cover from September 2020.The New Yorker described the cover as follows - "September, so often the month of turning — kids back at school, leaves shaking loose — seems different this year. The changes are there, but so is a kind of stasis; people remain mostly indoors, and the coronavirus pandemic is close to claiming its two-hundred-thousandth death in America. In his latest cover, Chris Ware captures the small moments of community that can appease such bleakness." Ware titled this cover “Last Days” after dismissing an original title, “Democratic Party” - he thought that was too ambiguous and unintentionally pejorative. The look of the house and the scene were influenced by Ware's own surroundings. He lives in the quiet & relatively diverse Oak Park neighborhood just outside of Chicago. In an interview with the magazine, he recounted neighborhood almost-but-not-quite get-togethers, not unlike what he drew here...which is based on Ware's belief that vastly more people still try to get along in America than not. Wow, a New Yorker cover, so cool, Chris! I love all the individual figures especially, but the fine linework in general is so fabulous.

He addresses the times perfectly. The mask wearers decide to still have a sense of community in tough times. It is their freedom of choice to do so. It may look different, than a regular block party, but it is to represent the different world we lived through. Nowhere does he inject politics into it and presents this scene like a journalist with an accurate take in his accurate linework. If this makes people uneasy, that's really on them.

What an amazingly thoughtful comment, Marcus. Thank you!

Perfection. And one of those rare pieces in our collections that if you hung in your home, would require no explanation to any civilian viewer.

A vivid and expressive window into the recent past... a beautifully significant work. Ware's rendering of the New Yorker logo alone is a reminder of his remarkable abilities.

This scene played out on my street, as it did many streets and neighborhoods. Perfectly captures a time/moment none alive will ever forget, which Ware, of course, is a master at.

Very poignant illustration. The mood and quietness captured is palpable. It is also a piece it is hard to take your eyes off of. I think you can look at his 100 times and each time it evokes something a little different.

I love everything about this. The scene. The characters. The moment in time. The linework. The under-drawing. Such a perfect example of Ware's work -- and a New Yorker cover to boot. Congrats on a perfect piece.

What a wonderful piece of history, Chris! And a Ware, the Chicago connection, his iconic style that evokes perfectly the weirdness and strangely comforting calm of that time if, like me, you were lucky enough to ride out the pandemic unscathed.

Fabulous piece, Chris! I love Chris Ware's work and this cover for the New Yorker is a classic! Really captures the pandemic years and the isolation we all felt. People in my neighborhood really did have get-togethers that looked just like this. Surreal, but real.
