Description“Tell me…Are we in Japan?”Splash page from the graphic novel Night Cry, Borja González’s follow up to A Gift From A Ghost. Night Cry was awarded the 2023 National Comic Prize, granted by Spain's Ministry of Culture and Sport. The judges recognized the graphic novel "for a graphic work of great elegance and exquisite beauty with which its author builds an album as fun to read as it is deep and fascinating. A neo-Gothic work in which the strength and vitality of its female protagonists stand out." From the publisher: When it comes to rituals, Teresa, who runs a bookstore specializing in magic and the occult, knows her fair share. But when she manages to summon Laura, an anime-loving demon, the ritual goes awry: Laura is there to grant her any wish, but Teresa doesn’t know what to ask for. And so the two are stuck with each other… Thus begins a strange cohabitation, while Laura decides to investigate a series of unexplained disappearances in town. Social/Sharing |

I really love the shapes here, especially the witch sillhouette juxtaposed against the very Charles Vess-like tree and the girl against the Mignola-esque backgrounds. I hope you enjoyed both stories!

Thanks, Rubén. I think the first book more than the second but I really ate up the art. To me, the Mignola influence is definitely there but also with a dash of P. Craig Russell and, yes, Vess!

Yes, I also noticed P. Craig Russell, but chose not to mention him because as you said, it's more of a dash. However, now that I'm bringing him up I may as well say what I was specifically thinking when I left my previous comment. Which is to say that I could also see a hint of his work, but specifically his work from the era in which he was inking Mignola!

Beautiful balance of contrast with the silhouette. Love the imagery in the world. Awesome piece Mark!
