DescriptionAnother quality Jim Woodring page, this one from Fran (2014), winner of the 2014 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize. Is Fran a companion/lover to Frank…or something more? The answers begin to unfold on this page that introduces a character with an attachment to Fran…and Frank is just not having it. This page has a little bit of everything. Woodring's characteristic finely etched rendering, his oddball character design, and beautiful sequential storytelling. Happy to add another page from this cartooning visionary. Note: this page was also re-used and recontextualized in Woodring’s recent One Beautiful Spring Day. Social/Sharing |

There is so much life to Woodring's work. Even the backgrouds in the panels seem organic.

The movement and emotion that he is able to convey while also maintaining a clasic, throwback style are impressive. Congrats!

It looks like the 8-eyed freak is telling Frank, "Your girl is hot, I think I'll make her mine!", as Frank then proceeds to break off a table leg to hopefully smash the 8-eyed freak with. Such great visuals!

Beautifully grotesque imagery showing the ugly feelings of jealousy very relatable and common to each of us.

I love the art style with this. The line patern in the background makes the characters pop out nicely. The character design is awesome. Really cool Mark.

Another winner, Mark! I just received my copy of "The Frank Book" and can't wait to crack it open (to discover more of this)! Such -cool- style to the storytelling and (especially) to the art itself; nothing is skimped upon. I love the unique backgrounds in each panel; the visual texture of the "alien's" pants, the patterns on the leg of the table that Frank broke off... but the most engrossing thing is the vase (?) on the table. I want to know more about that thing (and desperately hope that it survives its fall :) ). Frank's jealousy-fueled bared teeth is at once recognizable and (from my limited exposure to Frank) really alien. Some really interesting vibes running through this one... Great page, Mark! Congrats!
