DescriptionJohnny Bruck did a lot of wild covers. This is one of my surrealistic faves (Atlan #102, 1973).Q: What's better than a glass-domed city of the future? A: A glass-domed city of the future attacked by a giant cowboy! Bruck worked so fast he had to be inventive. He actually incorporated photo cut-outs into his paintings to save time on the "hard bits". Here, the cowboys head, hands, and gun belt are photos, as are the foreground soldiers in the lower right/left. At the end of the day, Bruck did whatever it took to realize an illustration within the tiny window he had to paint! I also love these types of SF/Western mash-ups. SF illustration has MANY examples. This is a classic one :) 12.5 x 18.5 acrylic/collage Social/Sharing |

Love it John! That's one big cowboy!
Big Tex gone wild! I'd like to source the photo elements. I'm guessing "Tex" probably started life as the Marlboro Man ; )

The concept is 50's B-Movie, but Bruck makes the mashup look fresh with a mix of 3 genres in 3 layers of depth! It appeals to military, futuristism, and the western fans!

I just can't get this pesky Nancy Sinatra song out of my head. What's it called again?
Hmmm. Oh well, great painting. All your western SciFi paintings are great. This one and panning for gold are my favorites.
