DescriptionMike Sekowsky had brought Supergirl into the Bronze Age two years earlier. At this point he was one of several providing pencils to Adventure Comics but devoted more energy to other projects including writing, drawing, and editing the mod Wonder Woman. Marv Wolfman and Steve Skeates handled writing duties for Supergirl now. This issue introduced the extradimensional villainess Nightflame, on a mission in our world to kidnap Supergirl. She should not be confused with Zora "Black Flame" Vi-Lar, the Kryptonian villainess featured in issue #400 (returning from issue #304), or Starfire, the human villainess of issues #402-407 who shares a name with three unrelated later DC characters. There sure were a lot of Flames and Fires running around! The first three pages establish Nightflame as a major threat as she lays waste to downtown. As the story progresses, she turns out to be a manifestation of Kara's own subconscious wish to die! Pretty dark stuff, but it fits the hard-edged Bronze Age tone that Sekowsky had brought to Supergirl. Sekowsky sometimes amused himself by putting DC staffers into his crowd scenes. The second, fourth, and fifth figures look to me like Joe Orlando, Len Wein (or maybe Steve Skeates), and Julius Schwartz, respectively. The background, on the other hand, is surprisingly sketchy, with the buildings only roughly inked. Deadline problems? Lazy assistant artist? Social/Sharing |

It's San Francisco with the Victorian homes and the cables on the ground for cable cars. Even the place for the summer of love is turned upside down in this new decade. The destruction really doesn't look like the kind of work Oksner would do though.

The whole issue was inked in this sketchy style. I have to beleive that is was a deliberate choice to do so.
