DescriptionSuperman from James Gunn’s Superman by Uko SmithSuperman is a character who has always meant so much to me. He is a helper, who radiates kindness, and truly is the first superhero. The first comic I ever received from my mom was a “DC Blue Ribbon Digest of Superman vs. The Aliens”. Christopher Reeves performance as Superman and Clark Kent left an indelible impression with me as child. The Kenner “Super Powers” Superman action figure was played with for endless hours allowing me to save the day many times over. I was around for the “Death”, “The Reign of”, and the “Return of Superman”. I saw him with long hair, electric powers, with capes and no capes. Even saw his “Secret Identity”, as an “All-Star”, his “Birthright”, through “For All Seasons” all the way to “Kingdom Come”. There was even the time I saw him sport an armored, collared, costume for a while. He is a character who brings me such joy and comfort. Whose unapologetic kindness and heroism exemplifies what comic character can do. Uko Smith is an incredible artist I love his style amd what he brings to everyone of his pieces. Back in July I spent a few days exploring #Metropolis while #JamesGunn and the cast and crew of #Superman were filming in #Cleveland. My first time in Cleveland was in 2006 when I was working as a production assistant on Spider-Man 3. While it was only a week of second unit (mainly effects plate shots and stunts for the scene where Spider-Man stops the Sandman from robbing an armored car), it was nonetheless incredibly cool. This production, however, was on an entirely different level. It was thrilling to see this massive production (over my four days visiting, I walked almost 40 miles) creating true movie magic. The set decorators, cast, and crew made this old #comicbook fan feel like a kid again! It was made even more special due to this to be filmed in the town where Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster created the Man of Steel. On my fourth and final day, I finally got to see the #ManOfSteel himself. David Corenswet looks amazing as Superman and the costume is incredible. I can’t wait to see his performance. And as a film nerd, it was so cool to watch James Gunn direct. Superman Is easily my most anticipated upcoming film. Gunn clearly understands the assignment, and has the potential to deliver us the Superman film we have been craving since Christopher Reeves and Richard Donner first gave us their beloved film. Superman, which will be launching James Gunn’s iteration of the DCU, hits theaters July 11, 2025. Social/Sharing |

Loving Uko's unique take on Kal-El here. The figure, perspective, and the background lines and block blacks...sublime stuff all around. Congrats, Matt!
