This is a comic character that I've only come across on rare occasions, but when I first arrived to Japan, I was amazed at the number of hobby comics (gourmet foods, pachinko, shogi, etc.) I'd come across in places that had waiting rooms, especially barber shops. Some of them (the pachinko ones for instance) were, culturally, kind of closed off to me, but others, the fishing ones for instance, had a kind of idealized nostalgia that, as an Eagle Scout, I could more easily relate to.
