DescriptionBack in action for their second solo outing with the character, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley gave us a fantastic opening scene for The Winter Soldier. In the span of just a few lines and minutes, they established a relationship between Steve and Sam that not only felt genuine, but would play a key role over the remainder of the Infinity Saga. They also gave us one of the most iconic lines in the entire MCU. While I would rank it slightly behind “I can do this all day” and “I am Iron Man”, “On your left” is just as iconic, IMHO. It’s also a hallmark of Markus and McFeeley’s scripts, as they regularly called back to lines of dialogue they’d set up earlier in the film… or even several films back. (Others off the top of my head include “Is this a test?” and “I’m with you to the end of the line, pal.”) While they weren’t repeating a line of dialogue when Thor said “I knew it” at the end of Endgame, Cap summoning Mjolnir was a call back to Steve jiggling the hammer in Age of Ultron. So, when Scott drew those two scenes for me last time around, I thought it would be a great idea to commission more paired scenes in the future. So, I made a list of them for Scott to tackle if he didn’t have a particular scene he wanted to draw next time around. The choices he made to bring the first part of this pair to life are dynamite. The cartoonish difference between the two jogging in panel two makes me smile, and I love the “camera” angle he chose for panels 2-5. It allows Sam to remain stationary in the panel while Steve takes increasing prominence in each one, to the point he overtakes him in panel 5 and Sam fades into the back of the panel. Love this scene. Such a great character moment for Steve.

I can still hear the First Avenger theme as this scene is playing. Also, I love that in the second panel, Scott exaggerated Steve's running pose like he's just taking an easy morning stroll.
