DescriptionFlashback to junior year of high school. I remember taking my girlfriend over to meet my grandmother for the first time, and she was nervous about it. I reassured her, “There is absolutely nothing to worry about. She is really nice, and is excited to meet you.” The meeting went off without a hitch. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about this introduction to Jesse's grandmother, Miss Marie L'Angell. This starting scene is a memorable moment in Preacher, which ultimately ends in the death of Tulip. This page is a great example of how well Steve Dillon could evoke emotion through facial expressions, and the dialogue from Garth Ennis only heightens the scene. It is very clear from the start that Miss L'Angell is a nasty woman. She wastes no time in establishing that as the disparaging remarks toward Tulip begin immediately after hello. As Tulip goes to defend herself Jesse tells her to zip it, foreshadowing just how dangerous of a situation they are in. I have been on the search for a nice Preacher interior for a couple of years now, and this page met my criteria in regards to story, mandatory Jesse and Tulip appearance, and budget. It is wonderful to finally acquire one. As a cool bonus, this page came from the collection of Kevin Smith. I am a big fan of all his films (just so happened to watch Tusk over the Christmas break :)), so to know he had it before makes this one just a little more special. Social/Sharing |

Awesome, Tyler! Great exampel from early in the run, and like you said, checks the boxes. May not be the best delivery in that last panel line from Jesse but he's just trying to help Tulip out. Uphill battle there and you that immediately. Glad your grandma/girlfriend meet up went a little better :) Big congrats, man!

Terrific Preacher example - not to mention signatures from both creators! Great way to end the year.

A seminal title of Vertigo of the late 90's! They put the nail in the coffin of th Comics Code Authority! These early pages set up the long form storytelling and showed that there was a long term plan even as Ennis and Dillon came out like a flame thrower!

Great one, Tyler! And while I'm not generally a fan of creators signing the art, those two sigs are damn near perfectly placed, especially compared to other PREACHER pages. Congrats!

Whoaaa! Now that's a frightening Preacher page! Brilliant work by Steve Dillon from Garth Ennis' script. I find scenes like this with the violence only implied, not actually shown, often more frightening than seeing the actual carnage. I like what you wrote about how Dillon could "evoke emotion through facial expressions." So true! It's a horribly scary page from a great comic book artist. Congratulations on a terrific pick-up!
