DescriptionI'm finally getting back into the swing of commissioning cards from Jeff on WhatNot (instead of just bidding on the warmup cards he auctions off). I wanted to do something a little more unique this time around, so after much thought on the matter, I asked him for Gossamer! Gossamer, one Ayla Ranzz, is better known as Light Lass, Lightning Lass, or Spark. The very roundabout explanation is that during the short-lived pre-Zero Hour Legionnaires series, the young Legionnaires took on new codenames that often did away with the standard "Boy-Girl-Lad-Lass" format. As such, Light Lass became Gossamer, with a new costume to match. I asked Jeff to draw her for a few reasons: because there's barely any art of her on CAF, because Ayla (as Spark) is his favourite Legionnaire, and because I wanted to see how he would tackle a character he knew very well, just with a slightly different design. And I really like the finished product! Jeff specifically referenced the Gossamer trading card which Adam Hughes did for the 1993 suite of DC trading cards (which Jeff blames for "sparking" his love of Ayla's character design in the first place!). You can see how Hughes' Gossamer differs from Moy's Spark, with a flatter, less "bouncy" hairstyle and a bit of a different face shape, and I like that Jeff carried over those design elements instead of just drawing Spark in Gossamer's costume. I love the sweet expression Jeff gave her, too, and I think the green background he chose is the perfect complement to her red hair and blue costume. Social/Sharing |

nice request and a great job by Jeff on this version of the character for the sketch card. The parallells to Hughes is interesting, the thicker outline of black that highlights her face/hair and costume remind me of Adam's inking as well.

Ooh, good point about the outline! Jeff often does his outlines like that, but he's mentioned that he looked to Hughes' art for inspiration when he was first developing his artstyle, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was a direct influence!

Jeff should do a variation of this card with the Looney Tunes version of Gossamer! They are both part of the WB family.

It's funny, when you search up "Gossamer" on CAF, this card and the Adam Hughes trading card art are the only posts that feature Ayla - almost all the other ones feature the Looney Tunes character! I'm sure Jeff could come up with a hilarious joint commission idea where she's making him levitate, or something like that.
