DescriptionIn this flashback sequence, Charles Xavier debates Magneto- whom he has just met- on the subject of mutants' coexistence with the rest of humanity, and begins his relationship with Gabrielle Haller (introduced in this issue). At the conclusion of their affair, Professor X leaves Israel, unaware that Gabrielle is pregnant with their son David.Powerful mutant David Haller, of course, becomes the character Legion in the wonderful New Mutants run by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. FX television's "Legion" may be the best comics-sourced program ever (at least thus far), and arguably surpasses Marvel's cinematic blockbuster fare, as well. So, while this is not an action page as beloved and valued by our hobby, it is a cool slice of comics history, nonetheless. Social/Sharing |

This is a wonderful page from one of my all-time favorite issues of X-Men. Cockrum's page design and storytelling ability is on full display here, demonstrating why he's one of the best ever.

Wow! This is one of the most signifcant X-Men pages I've seen in a while! I forgot all about this flashback sequence by Dave Cockrum and Bob Wiacek! What an amazing page depicting Charles Xaviar before he was crippled, traveling through Isreal with Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, before he became Magneto! It's so cool to see them debating the Mutant question back before it all became front page news! Love the layout with the three heads--Charles, Eric and a young Gabrielle Haller--looking out over the panels of their travels together. Gorgeous scenes! And then the bottom panels, depicting the romance of Charles and Gabrielle that will lead to the birth of David Haller, who becomes Legion! What an amazing pick-up! This page is the precurser to the birth of the whole Mutant story! Stunning piece, beautifully depicted by Cockum and Wiacek! I can't believe I haven't noticed this page before--It's mind-blowingly cool!
