Dave Johnson is, at least in this hobby, the most under-rated artist of the last 30+ years.

He is, by far, one of the greatest cover designers of our time. His run of covers on Detective and 100 Bullets are nothing short of iconic. And look at the esteem in which the great masters, Sienkiewicz, Chaykin, and Quesada hold him and his work. That his art does not command higher prices is a damn crime. I did not pay enough for this piece (though as a low budget collector, umm yay?). In fact, I should not be able to afford his work, let alone a cover.

This piece encapsulates a lot of elements of Johnson's style that I love; the brush work on the dress, the composition of the hair (hell, the composition of the cover), the rigidity and detail of the gun, and the deadly focus in Moneypenny's eyes.

Note that he has appeared to use this cover as a makeshift notepad, writing down "Rival Sons." Likely in reference to the Long Beach-originated rock band by that name. I love that. It adds to the artifactuality of the piece.

Stunning Bond cover and a real score for your first cover. And you are right; Johnson is underrated. This looks like it could be the cover for a classic Bond story, Diamonds Are Forever. Congrats!!

Dave Johnson is indeed one of the top graphic stylists working in comics and has been for decades. It IS a shame that his work has not garnered the attention someone of his skill level merits, but that DOES work to art collectors' benefit, doesn't it? You got your self a beauty AND a Bond. Congrats on your first ever cover acquisition!

I agree with your analysis of Johnson's work. The man has a great sense of humor to his art even matching his terrific level of graphic design (thinking about his Deadpool cover or drink and draw output). Congrats on this terrific Money Penny.
