DescriptionThis final page from the original mini-series was re-used seamlessly as the cover to multiple subsequent trade paperbacks (see additional images) and the back cover to a Cyclops and Phoenix collection. Always great to have a cool story page that also doubled (tripled, quadrupled) as covers.I loved this mini for several reasons. It really helped bring Cable to the table as a rounded character by filling in his backstory beyond big buy with big guns. It made a significant difference to his relationship with Cyke and Jean in the present day and I thought this storyline was a clever way to achieve it. Equally as important, this was when I discovered Gene Ha's work. There are pages in this mini that I pored over so often. His linework and the way he constructed his rendering was fascinating to me and I was instantly a fan. While I'm partial to Al Vey's inks for the majority of the mini, Rubinstein did admirably translating Gene's pencils here. Social/Sharing |

For the first time, in such a long time
That Jean’s Phoenix for her children
To hold art with the Cyke
And for Al Vey’s line, since you took inks Rubinstein
I find myself believin'
Ha's really gonna be alright
Now you're Askani to let you walk back into my life
Something I can't bring myself to do
Cause it's Gene Ha enough gettin’ over you
Ha knows you kept me Nathan until the end
Oh it's Gene Ha art love takin' over you
I don't think that I could say goodbye again

Not familiar with this series but this is a killer piece. It's emotive with the layout paired with the character expressions...good stuff, Eranga. Congrats on hitting a big nostalgic target!

I think HA would get better later on, streamlining his artistic approach and getting rid of all those 90s tiny lines BUT, like you (and everyone else?), I discovered his art back when and have a fondness for this period. This is a spectacular example.

I thought all of the Ha pages from this series that have been popping up lately were really nice looking. Cool to see you won this one. How cool that it was used so many times!

Wow! I somehow missed seeing this beauty posted. Great piece of X history and a wonderful splash. Great early timing to post well before this storyline hit hard with X-Men '97.

No joke, James! I've always loved this mini and Gene's art in it. Did I jolt up during the finale of X-Men 97? You bet I did!

I think I bid against you for this piece on Heritage.
Nice Snag.
