DescriptionWhat more needs to be said about Pepe Larraz? When all's said and done, he'll go down as a defining superstar in an era when needle-moving artists doing regular sequential work are a rare breed.This cover to Uncanny X-Men #700 (X-Men #35) closes the book on the Krakoan storyline. It doubles as a love letter to a significant era in X-lore from one of its original architects. It was also used in multiple promotional efforts leading up to the book. Some interesting notes about the original art: Pepe had originally intended for this cover to be printed vertically with the numbers "700" overlaid on the art via transparency. The parts of the characters that fell within the numbers would be in their older pre-Krakoan outfits. Editorial went in a different direction and wanted the cover landscape and wraparound which led to abandoning the "700' idea. Pepe would digitally modify the art within the numbers to reflect the Krakoan costumes. As part of the package, Pepe included the original art, an AP of the abandoned idea with the 700 and an AP of the final digital edits (see additional images). Jaw-dropping cover to Uncanny X-Men #700 by Pepe Larraz! Wow, what a cool assemblage of X-Men! In a way, I'm reminded of The Marvel Handbook covers by John Byrne with all the figures moving across the wraparound cover. But Pepe has topped those, I think, with the sheer number of characters and the interesting details of what they are doing. Tops, of couse, is Magneto leading the way, pushing Professor X in his wheelchair. But then I like Deadpool on the Blackbird jet, Rouge flying with such joy, Cyclops looking fondly at Jean Grey and Lockheed hovering over Kitty Pryde. Gorgeous art, great pick-up!

It's a shame Marvel didn't go with the original idea, because that would have been pretty cool with the overlay and the different costumes on display. Still, it's a fitting tribue to the Krakoan era by the artist who helped kick it off. Huge congrats on owning a landmark (Uncanny?) X-Men cover!
