DescriptionA Distant Soil #2 Pg. 20Artwork & Writing by Colleen Doran Lettering by Bob Pinaha Aria Press/Image Comics run As a long-time contributor/supporter to Colleen Doran's Patreon community, occasionally she will send me a care package of merch, books, prints, and sometimes even original art from projects she has done. This page came from one of those packages. A Distant Soil is a space opera/fantasy series about 2 psychically powered siblings who discover they have a role to play in the future of the alien civilization they didn't know they were a part of. It has a complicated publishing history, with the original version on WARP Graphics published from 1983 to 1986 and running only 9 issues. Colleen would re-do the series (re-write and with brand new artwork) with Aria Press for the first 14 issues starting in 1991 through 1996 and then continued the same run/version with Image Comics starting with issue 15 from 1996 through 2013 running up to 42 issues, and as of 2024 still has not wrapped up the story/series. Hopefully she is able to in the future. Recently I've been collecting the comic book run in single issue format for both the original WARP run and the Aria/Image run, and nearly have a complete set. Just missing a handful of issues left to find. I have read the first 2 volumes so far (through issue #25). I was very surprised and happy to see one of these earlier issue pages from the Aria/Image run featuring Liana, Aeren, Minetti, and Brent show up in one of the packages of goodies I've received from Colleen. As far as her creator owned works, A Distant Soil is her most recognizable series, and one that I have enjoyed reading and collecting recently. The page is oversized so it is not super easy to scan, tried my best, I'll update it later if I ever get a better one - the left and right margins are a tight squeeze and the right side margin is a bit fuzzy here unfortunately. The published version (in additional images) is also in black and white and was never colored for publication. Social/Sharing |

It's worth a read if you ever get around to it...or when Doran finally finishes the series.

Yes for sure I've enjoyed it, I have read up to the point of the first 2 volumes of collected trade paperback volumes from the Aria/Image run. I haven't gone back and read the WARP run 9 issues yet (still missing 1 of the issues to have the whole set then I'll read that version). Hopefully she gets to finish the Image run eventually

Cool! She finally sent you a freebie page she's closely associated with so you'll be less tempted to re-gift it!

Great faces and expressions throughout this page, man...the face front shot in the very middle almost feels like it's being framed by all the other panels. Effective stuff! Congrats on the Doran adds!

Many congrats, Kavi! It's a lovely page and although I haven't had the opportunity meet Colleen in person, she is a very nice person and very easy to deal with.
