DescriptionEarlier this year, Jeff Moy released his newest sketchbook – a continuation of his “You Asked For It!” series as its first all-colour entry, featuring a whole heap of the sketch cards, sketch covers, and 9x12 pieces Jeff’s done for his happy customers over the last few years. In addition to the sketchbooks featuring the normal cover – see additional images – Jeff also had twenty sketch cover versions manufactured, featuring an uncoloured printed title on a cover he could draw upon. I’ve never seen a “sketch cover sketchbook” before, but I think it’s a really fun concept! Now, I’m not normally one to pick up a “rare” comic-related item unless it’s a one-of-a-kind piece of original art, but in this case, it’s a new, limited-edition Jeff Moy sketchbook, and it was going to end up with a unique piece of art on the cover, so I was very excited to purchase one of the twenty special copies! I didn’t commission this one, though. It was an idea Jeff had out of the blue, and I watched him work on it during his WhatNot streams for months. When he finally decided it was done and put it up for auction, I was right there waiting! This piece is a Legionnaires-inspired homage to the iconic cover of Uncanny X-Men #268, and I think Jeff just knocked this one right out of the park. I think he should include it in his next published sketchbook, even (as a kind of sketchbook-ception?). There’s a lot of great parallels between the characters on the original cover and the Legion founders Jeff substituted in for them. It’s only fitting to have Cosmic Boy stand in for Captain America, since they’re both pillars of morality and leadership. Live Wire and Wolverine are both hotheaded powerhouses, and I love that Jeff saw the chance to have Garth’s lightning crackling around his hands in a nod to Wolvie’s “claws out” pose. Saturn Girl is of course the clear stand-in for Black Widow, given that they’re both girls, and in his efforts to make this homage as true to the original as possible, I can tell you that Jeff probably spent more time rendering Imra’s, ah, “haunches”, than he did any single other part of the cover. I also love that Jeff took a few artistic liberties with the homage, bringing the cityscape closer to the foreground, and drawing the buildings with more detail. I’m always a sucker for some well-drawn 30th-Century architecture, and Jeff really brought his A-game here. The giant Legion emblem in the background is or course another new addition, and it’s also the first large, fully-coloured Legion symbol in my collection! I love that Jeff gave it a raised/protruding look with those extra lines and shading, as though the emblem was crisply cut and carved out of the metal. Finally, as someone who’s mostly bought sketch cards from Jeff up to this point, owning a fully-coloured piece from him is really, truly something. I love the starker lighting on Live Wire as a result of his powers, and how his face is underlit because of them. The shading on Saturn Girl’s costume is fantastic too, and I think it’s reminiscent of Black Widow’s shading on the original cover. There’s some very clever highlighting on Cosmic Boy’s hair to keep his head from blending into the Legion symbol. And speaking of Legion symbols, all three are gleaming and gorgeously golden! This might very well be the only time you see the phrase X-Men appear in my art gallery, which is kind of fun, but who knows? Maybe I’ll end up with more homages down the line! I should also note that with the publishing of Jeff’s sketchbook, a whole bunch of my sketch cards from him – and one of my sketch covers – have officially earned their “published” status, including my profile picture! If you’ve commissioned a card or picked up a larger piece from him in the last two years or so, there’s a fair chance it might now be published, too! Social/Sharing |

Those haunches are more pronounced in white than it was for Black Widow. I guess we asked for it as Jeff delivers!

It's probably sacrilege to imply that this homage outshines Jim Lee's work in any way, but, I mean...
