Description

When Milton Caniff said he was leaving Terry and the Pirates to start the Steve Canyon strip, there were a large number of artists interested in taking on the art chores of the most popular strip of its time. George Wunder ended up being the successor and he continued the strip for over 2 decades after Caniff left, more than twice as long as Caniff's tenure. Here is the first in the sequence of try-out strip Wunder did for the series that got him the job. I also have the 17th one in this series. Pretty cool historical stuff with a nice dedication in the margin to my friend John Biernat who's collection this piece comes to me from.

He certainly did enough here to warrant the job. It holds your interest throughout even though it's just getting them from point A to point B.

It's really beautiful, high level stuff. I'm so glad I went from hating it to loving it over the years, especially now that I've come to realize it wasn't the art style I hated, but rather the stupid, goofball face of Hot Shot which seemed to be on every Wunder strip I saw!
