DescriptionPhantom Force #2 Pg. 55 "Probe" Pin-UpLayout by Jack Kirby Pencils & Inks (art) by Jim Lee Signed by Jim Lee & Jack Kirby Here's an interesting published piece and important part of Jack Kirby's history in comics (and Image Comics history as well), and a collaboration between Jack and Jim Lee! Phantom Force was the final book/series that Jack Kirby worked on before he passed away, co-created and scripted with writer Michael Thibodeaux (and additional scripting from Richard French). Image Comics released the first 2 issues, where Jack essentially worked with several of the Image Comics founders/creators and other creators as his inkers on the books. Rob Liefeld, Erik Larson, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Jerry Ordway, Danny Miki, Art Thibert, Dan Panosian, Mike Thibodeaux, Richard Horie, Keith Giffen, Chris Ivy, Jeff Matsuda, Karl Story, Al Gordon, Tim Townsend, Paul Scott, Steve Rude, Marat Mychaels, Marlo Alquiza, Jonathan Sibal, Chance Wolf, Dan Fraga, and Marty Lasick were all credited as inkers in the first 2 issues, plus bonus pin-ups with Jim Lee (one in each issue). This page 55 pin-up of "The Once & Future Probe" is the last page in the final issue of the series published by Image, Phantom Force # 2 (published in April 1994, shortly after Jack's death in Feb 1994). Six additional issues were published afterwards by Genesis West. The character Probe was one of the main/core members of Phantom Force and created by Jack. She has the power of telepathy, enabling her to communicate with either individuals or groups simply by thought. She can also form a psionic screen, which can make someone appear as someone else. Certainly a piece with an interesting backstory and while primarily being a Jim Lee executed piece also has Jack Kirby's character design all over it, and was one of the final pieces of his historic career in comics. When I'm lyin' in my bed at night
I don't want the Probe up
Nothing ever seems to turn out right
I don't want the Probe up
How do you move in a Phantom Force that's
Always changing ink
Makes wish that it's Jim Lee ink work
When I see the price that you pay
I don't want to Probe up
I don't ever want to need a page
I don't want to Probe up
Seems that folks turn pencilling
Jack they have a want
The Kirby thing to live for is today...
I'm gonna put on hold for my Image set
I don't want to Probe up
Open up her excellent chest
I don't want to Probe up
I don't want to have to shout it out
I don't want my hair to fall out
I don't want to be Thibodeaux
I don't want to be a good boy scout
I don't want to have to learn to count
I just want to have the biggest amount
I don't want to Probe up

Haha I'm never growing up! I mean, probing up...
Love the Ramones, the best punk rock band from Queens is a fitting choice for the punk rock style of comics Image was making back then!

Wow, pretty cool! You get the Solver Age's most revered artist in combination with the era's hottest new superstar, from the swan song of Kirby's illustrious career. Now all you need is a mid-80's Super Powers page that this and the Kamandi piece can bookend!

My first Kirby example was a bronze age Marvel Captain America piece so technically I have two 1970s examples one DC with the Kamandi and one Marvel with the Cap, but yeah I wouldn't mind an 80s example, and some older examples (60s Silver Age Marvel) to "complete the set" but it becomes harder and harder price wise as time goes on of course. His pre-Marvel stuff (romance or horror etc.) is also cool but less related to my own fandom and not sure how much of it is available out there, that stuff makes more sense for other collectors

Just so you know, I was only joking. You definitely should NOT get a Super Powers page!

I remember seeing this before and thinking it was cool that Jim Lee inked a Jack Kirby piece, but thanks for adding the background/context. I didn't know it was one of the last pieces that Kirby worked on (or that he collaborated with the Image founders), so thanks for sharing, and congrats on the pickup!
