I went to the Showcase at Illuxcon thinking I wouldn't buy anything. That was a stupid thought.

I spotted this large "prelim" drawing by Brendan Lancaster sitting next to the completed oil painting (see additional images for the painting, it was also sold but I do not own it). If I hadn't seen it with the painting, I would have thought it was its own, complete work, not a prelim. It is incredibly detailed and well rendered. In many ways, I like the drawing more than the finished painting... but I'm a sucker for grayscale (graphite/ink) work.

This character looks like they would be a perfect avatar for The Grey.

The finished painting was published in 'Infected By Art 12'.

I especially like how the cap is cracked and split in such a natural and organic manner. The rest of it has more feeling in raw pencil without colors to distract from the form and structure.

This may be a prelim for a painting, but as a drawing it is beautifully finished and functions perfectly well a piece of art in it's own right. It's wonderfully evocative, thanks for sharing it.
