DescriptionSo, folks can guess I'm obsessed with Tom Fowler. I just had to have him work on one of my favorite subjects, which is the Ghostbusters. I have many insane Ghostbusters stories, and so I needed a piece to go with that. I'd put Tom on retainer, or as I like to say, just set up the "direct deposit." There was no specific prompt beyond the characters, so everything here is purely of Tom's invention. The piece captures the silly/scary nature of Ghostbusters. I love the little bits of humor and the playful likenesses. He includes all the cool devices and the accurate bits and bobs of their jumpsuits.Further, I got an insane idea (probably in a dream) to embellish the frame on this piece with ectoplasm. So my framer, Sally, stood by me as we got the double red and white frame together (mimicking the Ghostbusters logo). Then I immediately went home and sort of vandalized it. The process probably deserves its very own write-up. I purchased chemistry-grade phosphorescent powder and consulted with my college bestie, who is a chemist. We figured out the optimal saturation level to pair the powder with clear nail polish. We then took a plastic syringe and oozed the mixture over the frame. You'll see in the photos how bright the glow-in-the-dark ectoplasm looks. It takes no real charging and lasts all night long. I did this over a year ago, and it's as bright as the day we first did it. I haven't told Tom, but I want a second piece so that we can do pink slime next. The Cyclops and Marvel Girl piece I commissioned has a majority of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard in it; you just have to pick out a boot or an arm or parts of them amongst the action. It's so impressive how much Tom can stack into a piece.

Your frame got slimed! Great line up cover where the lines lead the eye around.

"Two-point-five GEVs on the gigameter." Thank you, sir. I lay awake many a night thinking about setting this up. I want to get a second piece to do pink slime.

It might be too on the nose, but you can feature Janine in it. Or checkout their retro toyline. They used a lot of neon-like pallettes, especially with the ghosts they used as accessories. Might be glue gun fun too.

Ok, storytime, folks! I love Janine! We quote her in my house constantly. I went to a screening of GB1 for the 30th anniversary. It was held at this interactive theatre experience out of a black box in Brooklyn (BBQ Films). The place had an open bar serving Ecto-Cooler cocktails. There were slime demos. The card reading experiment. You could try on proton packs, slide a trap, and get attacked by the dog chair. It was superb! As we were milling about before the screening, which was on the set of World of the Psychic, I noticed a woman playing Janine sitting by herself just beyond the entrance. No one was paying attention to her because you kinda had to filter in. I took the seat next to her at her screen-accurate desk, and she revealed that the phone worked. You could listen to folks report their ghost problems. I asked her if she could yell "WE GOT ONE!" I am still smiling ear to ear just thinking about it. She wasn't prepared for someone to ask her, but she went for it and, over all the din, she shouts, "WE GOT ONE!" The whole place turns and applauds. A crowd descends, and they want her to keep doing it. I make a quick exit, and this woman shoots me the most doomed look ever, like "hey, your little request is going to ruin my vocal cords after this, forever!" I'm pretty sure she shouted over and over again at least 30 times. I loved it, but also felt bad. That night was like GB Heaven.

That's a good story. I bet cosplay Janine wasn't expecting to reach stardom working the phones that night. My wife and I like to quote, "Print is dead" and "I collect molds, spores, and fungi." I know that's an Egan quote but it's set off by Janine's underlying pining for him. When my wife and I quote that the underlying meaning between us is we are talking about someone who doesn't get the hint or crass know-it-alls who don't read. We also quote, "Nothing ever happens in there!"
