DescriptionI was fortunate to get on Dave McKean's commission list for SDCC 2024. He delivered this unique take on one of my favorite topics - Carol Day!Social/Sharing |

Such a cool idea to have McKean do a Carol Day commission. Beautiful!

Really striking piece. If you and I are ever sitting down together for a drink or a meal, remind me to tell you the story of helping Kwan carry two freshly painted (and practically dripping wet) McKean paintings from Allen's booth to his hotel across the street. The elevator part of the story is priceless.

I would love to hear this story...

Now that's what you call an unusual commission idea! And there's only one person in the world who would have thought to do it! I wonder if McKean has done any other comic strips comms before.

Really cool piece. A fitting treatment of Wright's character by McKean. I am curious how well he knew Wright and his characters and his thoughts on that legacy. Did you get into that at all with him?

Unfortunately, I did not have direct contact with Dave; I shared the www.carol-day.com website link with his rep to make sure he had whatever reference material he might find useful, but don't know how well he ultimately knew Wright nor his creation, Carol Day. McKean is English and born in 1963...so I would not be surprised if he may have had a baseline familiarity with the strip.

Very unique transferring this subject from an illustrative tradition to the experimental manner McKean works to include collage elements while still maintaining the rare beauty of Carol Day.

This is a spot-on comment, Marcus! The medium and McKean's style combine for a visually unique take on Ms. Day!!

Gorgeous piece. This year's batch of commissions seemed a little more special for whatever reason, and that is not intended as a criticism for work Dave did in previous years at all. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Really cool commission idea that homages the source material while still doing something completely different. Congrats!

I imagine it's something that really has to be seen in person...
