It's not like we didn't have noir in comics at that point. But boy did Frank take it to another level. Also one of those rare pages that has more white on it than black. What an epic saga. Beautiful, beautiful, stuff.

That and love the way you only see the bricks when there is a shadow being cast over them. Frank was on the tippy top of his game on this story.

I think an argument could be made that The Hard Goodbye was the artistic peak of Miller's career. Great page.

What a GREAT page! Congrats!
That Marv is an ungrateful wretch who deserved to fry. I mean, if someone gave you a fine coat would you kill them? If the answer is yes I worry about you. I heard a rumor that Frank rewrote the hard boiled dialogue. The guy on the next page originally told Marv that clothes do not make the man and no fashion would distract from the horror of his broken face. That revelation drives Marv into a kill frenzy again. Can you imagine this guy in a clothes shop? That was in another removed episode. Or anywhere with mirrors? Does the hall of broken mirrors episode ring any bells? You learn something new every day on this site; some of which is true.
Is it possible your version of Hard Goodbye's script could be an improvement on the original? It certainly sounds like it could!
In the book I wrote there is a character called Lord Bongo De Zola. I wrote a few partagraphs of pulp he ghost wrote in the thirties and forties. Will try and find it. Heres a little flavour of him ghost writing for Frank.
'You shot my dick off !''You won't need it in hell !'"Haw! Haw!" chortled Bongo as he wrote. Money for old rope; ghost writing Hard Boiled Drivel for Frank. A bit of Raymond Cathandler, a pinch of Film Noir. Black Comedy, and you can write it while pinching a loaf on the padded seat. Not on the seat. Sitting on the seat and plopping. Are you as dense as Frank's readers? They confuse trash with sin. Both dirty but enjoyable to produce and consume, before leaving the evidence behind for the lesser paid to dispose of or read."
The only thing Marv needs is a bigger mug to accommodate more band-aids.

What a striking page by Frank Miller from Sin City: The Hard Goodbye. I've always loved the innovative style that Frank devised for this book. On this page, we have the strong chiaroscuro effect that he perfected in this series. I love the choice he made here to make the background all white, except for the shadows in which he reveals the brick wall behind the figures. It's a little thing, but the book is full surprising little things iike that. Anyway, great pick-up, congrats!
This series was a bloody good time, and this page has nice and bloody imagery. Cheers!
